Mullens earns pair of top-10 finishes in USMTS Memorial Day weekend events

Tanner Mullens entered the Summit USMTS National Championship’s return to action over Memorial Day weekend as one of the hottest drivers in the country, having won seven consecutive feature races. He was also strong throughout the trio of $5,000-to-win USMTS events from Friday through Sunday, claiming a best finish of second.

The USMTS slate originally called for four consecutive nights of racing over the Memorial Day holiday, but Thursday’s 12th annual War in West Union at West Union, Iowa’s Fayette County Speedway was postponed due to Mother Nature.

As a result, Friday's Hobo 100K Nickel Nationals at the 4/10-mile Hancock County Speedway in Britt, Iowa, kicked off the festivities with 50 USMTS Modifieds in competition. Mullens drove his Mel Hambelton Ford No. 02 Modified to victory in his heat race and started second in the 40-lap feature. He finished in the runner-up spot, just 0.310 seconds behind Kyle Strickler. Reece Solander, Brandon Davis and Rodney Sanders completed the top five.

The next night, Mullens traveled to Spring Valley, Minnesota’s 3/8-mile Deer Creek Speedway, where he competed in another 50-car Modified field as part of the 21st annual Southern Minnesota Spring Challenge. He took fourth in his heat and third in his B-Feature to move into the night’s main event. He started 17th in the 40-lapper and registered a 12th-place result.

Finally, on Sunday, Mullens moved on to Mason City (Iowa) Motor Speedway, which attracted 34 USMTS Modifieds for the Jerry Hejna Memorial. Mullens finished as runner-up in his heat race on the 1/3-mile oval and rolled off sixth to begin the 40-lap feature. He fell back due to a wheel issue but still came home ninth.

Following the Memorial Day weekend swing, Mullens sits third in the Summit USMTS National Championship standings.
