Oldfield Makes It Three!

Tonight at the Perth Motorplex Jamie Oldfield (Oldfield Racing) not only made it three feature wins for the season, but he claimed his third WA Late Model Championship!

Jamie was classy throughout the evening, claiming a heat win and finishing third in the other (tied with Jay Cardy (Cardy Racing Components) on points and only seperated by lap time) to start on the outside of the front row alongside former Australian Champion Kodee Brown (McCorry Brown Racing Team) who claimed a win and a second place in his two preliminary races.

A full twenty-four car field would greet the starter for the thirty-five lap Championship decider, with Jamie using the high line immediately to cruise into the lead with Luke Halliday (Halliday Racing) following him through for second after starting in position four.

Brown would momentarily hold on for third before Rod Musarra (Team Rocket) also on the highline, got around him to complete the opening lap.

Jamie quickly set about opening up the gap, with Halliday and Musarra doing their best to stay with him while Brown was running on his own, the rest of the pack, led by fifth placed Matt Goodlad (Daytona Racing) all locked together further back.

Although Jamie enjoyed a solid lead, Halliday and Musarra kept him in their sights early, Musarra even the nose under Halliday a few times but unable to make the move.

As Jamie approached the first of the lapped traffic he went low, as did the car being lapped of Bruce Mckenzie, the two coming together and McKenzie spinning in turn four to bring out the yellows with six laps complete.

Jamie was able to keep his spot at the front of the field and got away cleanly, Halliday able to stay with him as Musarra and Brown fought for position, while Warren Oldfield (Oldfield Racing) was the big mover, passing a number of cars, including Goodlad to lock into fifth place.

Jamie would again encounter the first of the lapped traffic another six laps later, but this time he would get by cleanly, while Musarra was able to make his move on Halliday and claim second place while Warren got by Brown for fourth.
Quickly Jamie put a number of lapped cars between himself and second, but Musarra found something on top and began to close the gap, while Warren caught and passed Halliday for third on lap seventeen.

Warren continued his run and was able to scoot past Musarra a few laps later, setting out after Jamie with fifteen laps remaining.

Lapped traffic continued to play its part and although Jamie was doing his best to stay out of trouble, Warren was able to close the gap significantly, chopping around 0.3 seconds off each lap.

All of a sudden Jamie got a break, passing a number of cars, but again Warren caught back up, both Jamie and Warren forced off the bottom as they attempted to get around the lap cars.

Lap twenty-six finally saw them back in some semblance of clear air, Jamie holding down a gap between 0.8 and one second as the laps ticked by.

With four laps remaining the yellow lights came on, with Cardy stranded and facing the wrong way at the end of the back straight, bringing out the yellows and setting up a dash to the finish while ten-time former WA Champion Brad Blake became the first official retiree of the race.

Again Jamie held his nerve and got away cleanly on the restart, but it would only last another lap or so as David Boyes (Boyes Motorsport) spun with Bruce McKenzie left with nowhere to go in turn two, with three laps remaining.

It was at this point that Australian Champion Joe Chalmers (Team BCM Motorsport:) would also retire infield, a disastrous night from the opening heat putting his WA title aspirations on their head and certainly going to have an impact on the Pro Dirt Series points.

Jamie and Warren were clear on the start, with Musarra all of a sudden under pressure from a charging Lachlan Onley while Halliday faded back to sixth after Kodee Brown put the car on the highline and raced past.

Jamie and Warren pulled well clear while Brown maintained his line and shot around Musarra, who was still desperately trying to hold off Onley and Halliday.
Barely avoiding a spinning Beau Oldfield (who then headed infield, joining Jac Dolmans as one of the four DNF cars of the race), Jamie and Warren came round with two laps remaining, but by this stage they were over three seconds ahead of Brown, while as the white flag flew Onley got under Musarra for fourth.

Back up front though it was all Jamie Oldfield, defeating Warren Oldfield by over a second while Brown was over three seconds further back in third. Onley and Halliday would round out the top five finishers.

It was an epic night of racing and the perfect teaser ahead of the upcoming Australian Title, to be held at the same venue in just a few weeks time.

Stay tuned for all the updates in the coming weeks!
