Felker Finishes Eighth on Opening Night of Short Track Micros Nationals

Inside Line Promotions – BELLEVILLE, Ill. (July 23, 2013) – Andrew Felker chose a nice change of pace last weekend.

He hopped back in a micro for the Short Track Micros Nationals – the highest-paying micro sprint show of the year – set for Friday and Saturday at Belle-Clair Speedway.

“It was kind of a relaxing weekend,” he said.

Of the 95 entrants, Felker earned the most points through the heat races on Friday as he charged from sixth to the victory.

“I got lucky and went out with one of the later heat races,” he said. “The track had started to widen out. The first couple of laps I went to the top side and got a couple of cars there. The car was really good for the heat race. I just set sail after getting the lead.”

That put Felker on the pole for the first 15-lap qualifier, which transferred the top four to the main event.

“They reworked it and had a fresh track right before the qualifier,” he said. “The track was kinda slimy. I spun the tires on the start. The car was a bit too tight and I ended up running third.”

Felker started 13th in the 30-lap feature, which locked the top six into Saturday’s main event.

“We worked our way to eighth and then had an incident,” he said. “I fell back to about ninth or 10th around Lap 12. The last 18 laps went green to checkered with the throttle hung wide open. I was using the brake to slow down what I could. I was up on the cushion, up against the wall. With a hung throttle I couldn’t really do much.”

Felker rebounded to finish eighth and narrowly missed a lock-in position.

He returned to the track on Saturday, but the show was rained out during hot laps.

Felker will get back in his midget this weekend with a POWRi Lucas Oil National Midget Series tripleheader, beginning Thursday at Tri-City Speedway in Pontoon Beach, Ill. On Friday, he will compete at U.S. 36 Raceway near Cameron, Mo., before an event on Saturday at Valley Speedway in Grain Valley, Mo.
