Felker Caps Challenging Weekend with Runner-Up Finish at Valley Speedway
Inside Line Promotions – GRAIN VALLEY, Mo. (July 29, 2013) – Last weekend was one of the most disappointing for Andrew Felker, who was sidelined before the action started during the first two of three POWRi Lucas Oil National Midget Series events.
After advancing from fourth to second place during his heat race at Tri-City Speedway in Pontoon Beach, Ill., on Thursday, Felker was scheduled to start on the inside of the second row for the main event. Unfortunately, he didn’t get to take the green flag.
“I went to push off for the feature and it stripped out the drive shaft and the rear end,” he said. “I went to fire off and it basically turned all the edges off on the drive shaft. It was all steel, heavy duty stuff so it wouldn’t do that. We pushed down the frontstretch and that was the end of it.”
Felker returned to the pits and was credited with a 21st-place result. Similar problems plagued the team the following night at U.S. 36 Raceway near Cameron, Mo., where he maneuvered from third place to win his heat race. That placed him on the outside of the front row for the main event, which Felker was unable to start.
“I had rear end problems again,” he said. “We made it on the straightaway and turned it into the work area.
“It was tough. We definitely had cars good enough to win or at least be in the top three. It’s a tough one to swallow.”
The final night of the tripleheader was Saturday at Valley Speedway, where Felker won his heat race and started second in the main event. This time he was able to take the green flag and jumped to the lead on two of the first three starts, which were all called back.
“I think we led Lap 6,” he said. “We fell back to second and followed Zach Daum most of the race. With about six or seven laps to go I got to the lead down the backstretch a couple of times and just couldn’t quite clear him. The middle went away at the end so I had to fall in line.”
Felker finished in the runner-up position to close out the weekend.
“We didn’t get too crazy on setup or push it too hard and slide off the track,” he said. “We just made sure we finished after the luck the first two nights. Definitely disappointment with the first two nights of finishes, but happy we ended on a good note.”
Felker is scheduled to kick off a busy week on Tuesday at Solomon Valley Speedway in Beloit, Kan., before Thursday and Saturday races at Belleville High Banks in Belleville, Kan., with the USAC Honda National Midget Series. Angell Park Speedway in Sun Prairie, Wis., will host a race on Sunday with the Badger National Midgets to wrap up the weekend.
