Rolling with the punches

It is fair to say life has been a bit up and down lately for popular Pro Dirt Series competitor Veronica McCann.

A scheduled racing trip to the USA in the off season never really got off the ground after an off track injury saw ‘Red Hot’ Roni injure herself badly enough to require surgery. Upon her unscheduled return to Australia, it was announced that ‘Bloomer’ had passed away, Roni had the surgery and then it was announced that she has also scored a coveted role working at the Perth Motorplex in what was a massive few weeks for the popular racer.

However, all that will be pushed to the side come racing season, where despite being on the sidelines for the moment, Roni is laser focussed on what lies ahead.

“I'm hoping to be on track in November pending the recovery” says Roni. “We tend to get a little smarter as we get older and my main focus is to make sure I get as much movement back in my ankle as possible and I know that's going to take a while given the extent of the injury. Despite that, when an Australian Title is in your home state it always puts a tad more emphasis on needing to get the best out of your deal.”

Roni has had solid results in recent years, a podium in the State Title a highlight, and for the last decade consistently she has finished in the top twenty in the Pro Dirt Series points (including nine times in the top fifteen and seven times in the top ten).

Now, the LMRWA GM still has plenty she wants to achieve, and although things haven’t quite gone to plan so far, she is still focusing on what lies ahead.

“When you're sitting on the sidelines for the start of the season it's hard not to feel overwhelmed watching the guys who are your main competitors, getting laps, learning and continuing to find car speed” grimaces Roni. “Especially with a tyre rule change for this season, the R&D leading up to that title is crucial.”
Luckily, Roni got herself ahead of the game prior to her trip, ensuring that once she is all healed, she will hit the ground running.

“I organised my usual off season pull down and parts servicing prior to going to the US but the rebuild is on hold for a while until I can get mobile. As soon as I am able, the #50 will be back together and ready to hit the track.”

When asked about her goals for this season, Roni’s response is simple:

“All eyes are on March.”
