Thomas Holds High Expectations in Return to Pavement Racing at New Smyrna
Inside Line Promotions – LINCOLN, Ill. (July 15, 2014) – Tyler Thomas is headed back to Florida this weekend with high expectations.
Thomas, who has two podiums in a pair of pro late model starts on the pavement at New Smyrna Speedway in New Smyrna this season, picked up the victory in his most recent outing for Tim Russell.
“I know the car is going to be pretty good,” Thomas said. “Every time I go out there we make a lot of improvements and I understand what I need in the car to fit my driving style. I obviously like to win every time I hit the track. I think it’s possible to get another one.”
Thomas said his first goal for Saturday’s race at New Smyrna Speedway is to finish the 50-lap race.
“It’s a matter of me being patient, being smart and thinking,” he said. “Knowing that I have the car capable of winning makes it a lot easier.”
Thomas is coming off a frustrating end to last weekend when he drove a midget for Hans Lein.
After finishing second in his POWRi Lucas Oil National Midget Series heat race on Friday at Lincoln Speedway, Thomas lined up on the inside of the fifth row for the main event.
“It was kind of one lane on the bottom,” he said. “They didn’t have infield tires and it had rained so everybody was fighting for the bottom. I think we got up to second by halfway. I tried the top on one of the later restarts and fell back to fourth. We were three wide racing for second.”
Unfortunately, a hose came off the car and dumped all the power steering fluid out with approximately eight laps remaining.
“I lost my steering at once,” he said. “We had a car capable of winning. It just didn’t fall in place for us.”
Thomas was credited with a 20th-place result after exiting the track early.
Saturday’s POWRi event at Fairbury American Legion Speedway in El Paso, Ill., was rained out.
