Thomas Prepares for Open Wheel Championships

CHILLICOTHE, Ohio – Aiming to get some practice in ahead of the All Star Circuit of Champions two-day event over the coming weekend, Cale Thomas set out to his favorite race track, Atomic Speedway. In the Ohio Valley Sprint Car Association event, Thomas came away with some valuable insight on the speedway as well as a sixth-place finish in Saturday night’s main event.
27 sprint cars entered the pit area at the high-banked Chillicothe, Ohio speed plant, and Thomas’ 12.381-second qualifying lap scored him 11th overall. From the outside front row in the second of three heat races, he took the lead at the start and never looked back, scoring the heat win by nearly two seconds.
As the winner of heat two, the heads-up feature grid slated the Engler Machine and Tool No. 91 starting second for the 25-lapper. Early on, it was apparent that Thomas was battling a loose condition, and fell to sixth early. When the track began to take rubber, the handling was better but passing was at a premium. Unable to gain, but holding his position, Thomas finished the event in sixth place.
