Taylor Holds His Own Using 305 Engine During ASCS National Tour Event

Inside Line Promotions – CALHAN, Colo. (Oct. 11, 2017) – Zac Taylor’s plans to lease a 360ci engine to compete with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour last weekend didn’t materialize. However, the teen and his family decided to forge ahead with their 305ci motor and the results were more than respectable.

The Friday portion of the doubleheader at El Paso County Raceway was rained out. The skies cleared Saturday for the second night of the marquee event at the track where Taylor was recently crowned champion.

Taylor started on the pole of his heat race, which had heavy-hitters like Hall of Fame driver Sammy Swindell and ASCS national champion Wayne Johnson in the mix.

“I knew the only chance I had was to get out front early,” Taylor said. “The ASCS starts are different from what I’m used to and they called me for jumping and put me back to third. I ran third most of the race and got passed late and ended up fourth.”

Taylor lined up 12th in the feature and nearly earned a top-10 finish as he placed 11th.

“We were simply down on horsepower,” he said. “My mom read some of the comments from the ASCS drivers who said they had a hard time figuring out the track. I think it’s one of the easier tracks we run on. I wish we would have had a 360 motor.

“I had some goals in mind going in. First, I didn’t want to finish last. Second, I didn’t want to get lapped. Third, I wanted to finish ahead of a 360. Finally, I wanted to at least maintain position or better my starting spot. By the results it was a very successful weekend.”

As for the rest of the season?

“The ASCS people want us to come to their race at Cocopah (Speedway in Somerton, Ariz.),” he said. “If we can get a 360 motor we might do that. Our plan this winter was to buy one so we will see.”

Taylor said if the 360 engine deal doesn’t materialize soon his family will continue working on their plans to compete at the Turkey Night Grand Prix midget race Nov. 23 at Ventura Raceway in Ventura, Calif., and the Chili Bowl Nationals in Tulsa, Okla., Jan. 8-13.

“In the past we have leased a ride, but we’re talking with Todd Henry who has given me a great opportunity to race his midget the past two summers and we might just take his midget to the Chili Bowl,” Taylor said.
