Thesenvitz Scores Solid Top Five Finishes

BRANDON, S.D. – After taking a weekend off of racing, Trey Thesenvitz returned to action Labor Day Weekend for two consecutive nights at South Dakota’s famed Huset’s Speedway on Sunday and Monday in his family-owned #53 Sawyer/Yamaha.

Sunday night started off in promising fashion for the Jasper, MN racer, as he ran the fastest lap in hot laps. His pill draw put him in the third starting position for the heat race, where he would remain throughout the heat race, finishing third.

The points-based invert for the twelve-lap main event would put Thesenvitz outside of row two. He would get past the third starter when the green flag dropped, and went to work on battling for second. By the time he made the pass just after the halfway point, the leader had a full straightaway lead. Thesenvitz closed the monster gap in short fashion, taking just three laps to get there. The leader caught lapped traffic on the last lap, stumbling once, but not quite enough to give a clear shot at a pass. Thesenvitz would settle for second, crossing the stripe about a half second after the winner. He later joked that in the 12-lap features that Huset’s hosts, he runs his best laps on laps 9-15, as several times this season, he has fallen just short of a feature win after simply running out of laps.

He would try again Monday night for the penultimate points race at Huset’s in 2014, locked in a tight battle for the last step on the podium in the season point tally. Thesenvitz would take the green flag in heat race action from fourth, and pass two cars to finish second.

Post-inversion, Thesenvitz found himself in the seventh grid spot for the feature. The track, which sometimes allows for constant action and other times has one dominant lane, would determine how easy it was to make the charge to the front. Unfortunately, it was the latter of the two, and passing was only possible on the start and restarts. Thesenvitz would do his best to salvage a good run, moving up to fifth on the first lap, but his progress stalled. He finished the uneventful race, in which the hard charger passed only three cars, in the fifth spot. However, he lost ground to the driver he is battling in points, who finished second. It was just enough to give up the third spot in points, by a mere two markers, with one race remaining.

Thesenvitz would like to thank MerchLane, Performance One, and Speedshack Performance, as well as his family, his crew chief Scuba Steve, and all of his great fans for their continued support.

Thesenvitz next plans to compete on September 7 for the final points race of the season at Huset’s Speedway in Brandon, SD in the #53 600cc micro sprint entry.
