ARCA Trucks Invade Angola Speedway This Saturday
Millersport, OH – Rain has affected nearly every event this season, and the first Angola Motorsport Speedway event of 2015 was no different. Strong thunderstorms washed out the May 30th return, making this Saturday’s event the series’ return to Angola.
Built in 1964, Angola Motorsport Speedway spent the first seven seasons of its life as a dirt track. It wasn’t until 1971 that the high banked paved 3/8 mile track we know today opened for weekly racing.
Only one ARCA Truck Series event has ever been held at Angola. That event was August 18th, 2012. 2014 series champion Danny Jackson set the fast time, but didn’t lead a single lap of the event. Chad Poorman, driving for local ARCA Truck Series driver/owner Todd Gearhart, led the event early on until troubles with a wheel took him out. 2012 and 2013 series champion Levi Mansfield would inherent the lead and eventually the win.
After finishing second in the 2014 points standings, Levi Mansfield had decided to take a year off. But plans changed. Mansfield gave into temptation and will be behind the wheel of the number 9 Quarrick Racing Chevrolet on Saturday. His first race in an ARCA truck since Lake County Speedway last October.
Joining Levi Mansfield from the 2012 event is points leader Cody Quarrick, Shawn Szep, Brandon Huff, and Brad Yunker.
Cody Quarrick comes back to Angola with the points lead in 2015, but has yet to claim a win. As the season reaches the halfway point, Quarrick has average finish of 2.25 on the season. He has yet to finish out of the top 3 with three straight runner-up finishes to start the season.
Chasing him in the points includes Shawn Szep and Brandon Huff, both who ran at Angola in 2012, and Jeff Myers Jr., who is making his first appearance.
Fresh off a win, his second of both 2015 and his career, Shawn Szep comes to Angola seeking to better his fifth from 2012. Szep is overcoming a rough start to the season that put him behind Cody Quarrick, Jeff Myers, and Brandon Huff in the points standings. He erased some of that deficit with a win at Lake County Speedway, which was quickly offset by a DNF at Motordrome. However, another solid run at Angola this weekend would definitely help his run at the Championship.
Also chasing Quarrick for the championship is Brandon Huff. Huff began the season strong at Toledo Speedway, but until a runner-up finish at Columbus Motor Speedway on July 11th, Huff had a few rough runs at Lake County and Motordrome Speedways. He too looks to better his 2012 finish, where he came home 7th.
Before either Shawn Szep or Brandon Huff get to Quarrick for the lead, they’ll have to get past 2014 Holley Performance Rookie of the Year Jeff Myers Jr.
Jeff Myers Jr. started the season off on top with a win at his home track Toledo Speedway. Myers followed that up with a third place at Lake County Speedway before finding his way back to victory lane at Motordrome Speedway. He comes to Angola Motorsport Speedway to make his first start after a fifth place finish at Columbus Motor Speedway. In order to get back into the Championship chase, Myers needs a good finish and to finish ahead of Cody Quarrick.
In the Holley Performance Rookie of the Year standings, Katlynn Leer leads the way. She enters this weekend’s event after a fourth straight top-ten finish at Columbus Motor Speedway. She is the only rookie driver that has any experience at Angola, but those laps were limited to very little practice at the rained out May event earlier this year.
