ARCA Truck Racing: A Year Of Firsts: Shawn Szep Wins First Rocco Kirsch Pole Award At Angola!

August 22nd, 2015 (Angola, Indiana) – Shawn Szep is intricately involved in the ARCA Truck Series, running his first race in 2009 and full seasons since 2011. He is also a Phoenix Management Group of Ohio LLC Board member. But until this season, had never won a race until Lake County in June (and then backing that up with another at Columbus in July).

But Szep had still never won a Rocco Kirsch Pole Award. All that changed for the Marysville, Ohio driver in Angola, Indiana when he took his first in the Double B Garage 100 at Pam Shelmadine’s Angola Motor Speedway! It wasn’t the track record (Jeff Myers Jr. set that last month at 15.080 seconds), but was close at 15.15.108!

“I’ve never done this before! You’ll have to tell me what to do!” joked the #81 Technicom Chevy pilot. “The truck ran great! I’ve got to thank all the crew! I’m happy to finally get one!” Szep then rolled a five and a one with the dice and the invert will be six!

Rounding out the rest of the field was defending winner Brandon Huff (who led practice), point leader, Cody Quarrick, Billy Strehle, Brian Brewer, Myers Jr., Brad Yunker, Katlynn Leer, Bob Mikolajczyk and Ralph Harrod.

In the first heat race, Brad Yunker was able to hold off a hard-charging Myers for his second heat win at this facility this year. Behind them were Mikolajczyk, Leer and Harrod.

In the second heat, Quarrick claimed his first in almost two years (dating back to the Kentucky Motor Speedway) by besting Huff, Brewer, Szep and Strehle.

The #77 Leer team, which leads in the Holly Performance Rookie of the Year standings, was late in arriving as their hauler broke down on the freeway south of Ft. Wayne, Indiana at about 10:30 A.M… After trying various companies to fix the problem, the team finally left the vehicle on the side of the road, borrowed another from fellow competitor Yunker and made it on time for qualifying!

The Double B Garage 100 will take their green flag at approximately 9:30 P.M.!
