DId Mother Nature Win, Again?
So, who figured after the 2nd rain delay that the Levi Jones Classic was gonna be a wash out again … or, did you stick it out and hang with us until the checkered fell well after midnight?
Whatan interesting day in the life’s of USAC racers. All of USAC officials and racers had their eyes peeled on the sky and the radar settings on their phones.
it was close to noon when the word came out via texts and social media that, we were racin’ at Red Hill Speedway for the 2nd attempt at the "Salute To Levis Jones” in 2025
Pit gate opened at 3:30 and many were leery about getting that little wrist band, as the forecast was showing a nice sized cell to pass by between 4 & 5. And, that it did, a somewhat heavy downpour delayed even the drivers meeting from it’s 6 pm set time to closer to 7. Push trucks circling the track to get it back in race shape and cars were out to wheel pack. As everyone scrambled for the last minute adjustments prior to qualifying, yet another round of rain … and 90% of us figured, that was it. So, 2nd rain delay — finally pushing off to qualify when after about the 5th car Mother Nature starting dropping. But, it wasn’t really hard enough to stop qualifying, so it continued. Well, after all 23 cars wentt out playing the rain rain, the USAC officials decided that it really hadn’t been a great idea to have them race “ the clock” in the rain … and we did it all again, yeap, requalified!! SO, at 10:40 pm, we were still getting in qualifying laps!!. First session of qualifying had the 92, 13th … so, getting in those extra 2 klps helped Chase out, and was 8th quick.
" Friday the 13th certainly lived up to its reputation with a series of rain delays interrupting the proceedings, and qualifying not wrapping up until just before the clock struck 11pm local time. But in what was the fifth attempt at holding the event named in honor of Levi Jones, the show was a go.
The event was rained out three separate times in 2024, and once more earlier this spring. Perhaps it was fitting that it took five times to run the event.
After all, Jones, from nearby Olney, Illinois, captured five USAC National Sprint Car driving championships in his decorated career.”( stoen from RIchie Murrays’ USAC story, with his permission )
3 heats were pretty uneventful .. Chase in Heat 2, came in 2nd. that combined with quaifying time, gave Chase an 11 th place starting position …
honestly, the beginning pf the Main was pretty much a one liner - , it didn’t really get interesting til about 1/2 way = but it was waving that last lap white flag that brought out cautions …. and Chase made his moves. From 11th to 3rd!!! Not only another podium, but Hard Charger too!!!
Tom and I keep pinching ourselves, as this was our dream, to run with USAC Nationals… much less to be running up front with the best of the best. We had decided early on that we couldn’t run the entire USAC schedule, ( as that Social Security Check Sponsorship only goes so far.), we’ve missed a few here and there - but to be sitting for now, 10th in overall points — yikes!!! Unfortunately, with the series heading to PA next week to run The 6 night Pennsylvania Swing, the 92 won’t be there to conpete. Chase, on the other hand will be in action at Port Roylal Speedway on June 21st in the Pink 69 Champ car.
it takes an army to do this …and the MOose Army, is pretty small, but oh so efficient : Steve Williby, Tom “ The Moose”, Shari WIlliby and me … that’s all folks!!! I don’t know how these 2 guys get it all done and remain so competitive … but where there’s a will there’s always a way!!
