Christian takes 5th in Doug Murphrey Memorial finale
Gary Christian traveled south for the weekend as the USMTS National Championship schedule shifted to Greenwood, Louisiana’s Boothill Speedway for the 19th annual Doug Murphrey Memorial. Driving his Pannell Chipping No. 58x Modified, Christian scored a top-five finish in the event finale on Saturday.
When the two-day show kicked off on Friday evening, 40 USMTS Modified competitors were looking for the $5,000 first-place prize at the quarter-mile clay oval. Christian claimed the second spot in his heat race and rolled off third to begin the 40-lap A-Main. He competed inside the top 10 for much of the race but faded late and finished 15th.
On Saturday, Christian turned in a strong performance among a field of 38 USMTS Modifieds at Boothill. He drove from sixth to third in his heat, positioning him 10th to start the $10,000-to-win main event. He climbed five spots in the 50-lapper to round out the top five in the finishing order behind Rodney Sanders, Kyle Strickler, Jason Hughes and Chris Henigan.
With the Dough Murphrey Memorial in the books, Christian holds the eighth spot in the Summit USMTS National Championship standings.
