Chalmers is Nationals Champion!

Tonight at the Perth Motorplex former Australian Champion Joe Chalmers exacted a manner of revenge as he raced his way to victory in the ninth annual Late Model Nationals!

It was a great night of racing with thirty nine competitors contesting eight heats, but the front row on the feature would be shared by Luke Halliday and Myles Moos after both went through their heat races undefeated.

As the race went green Moos went high and Halliday low, Halliday edging by while American visitor Joe Godsey got by Halliday to move into the lead down the back straight as
Moos dropped back.

Halliday fought back and took the lead through turns three and four to lead the opening lap, with Chalmers and Moos side by side behind them.

Godsey went low and shot into the lead and Chalmers followed him through on the bottom into second place with three complete.

Godsey locked onto the bottom and Chalmers tried sticking the nose through but it didn’t quite happen at this particular juncture of proceedings.

Moos and Jamie Oldfield were now right behind Halliday and went high and low at the same time to get past him through turn one while Moos continues the momentum and drew alongside Chalmers on the outside.

Unfortunately half a lap later the yellows were on as a spinning Halliday came to a stop on the front on the front straight.

Luckily for Halliday Stewards reinstated him into his spot and with the last lap not complete, the order would be Godsey to lead away Chalmers and Halliday for the restart

Godsey continued to lead Chalmers on the restart, while Oldfield was running on the low line and went for a Hail Mary move that didn’t pay off, losing three positions.

Halliday fought back and momentarily got around Chalmers while further back Jason Oldfield arrived on the scene and got by Moos.

Jason then chased down and passed Halliday, who then fell into the clutches of Warren Oldfield and Moos.

Warren continued his run and raced into third, the order at the halfway point Godsey leading while Warren got by Chalmers in turn four to complete lap fifteen.

Lapped traffic was also coming into play and just as the field was about to complete lap twenty the yellows came on as Bradley Oldfield spun in turn two.

With twelve to go the order was Godsey, Warren Oldfield, Chalmers, Jamie Oldfield and Moos in the top five.

Godsey dropped to the bottom and led away but Chalmers went high and went around the outside of Warren and then got in front of Godsey to take over the lead with eleven remaining.

Two laps later Godsey had Warren go underneath him for second, but Chalmers by this point had built up a solid lead.

Warren closed quickly on Chalmers in the final corners but it wasn’t enough, Chalmers winning by 0.3 seconds with Oldfield settling for second and Godsey a fine third to bring to a close a huge month of madness for the Late Models!
