Schaeffer's Oil Southern Nationals

Ross Bailes Wins Southern Nationals Series Opener at Beckley for $10,053 Payday

(MOUNT HOPE, WEST VIRGINIA) The Schaeffer's Oil Southern Nationals Series presented by Coltman Farms Racing and fueled by GoSunoco kicked off the 2025 edition of the tour on Friday night in front of a great crowd at Beckley Motor Speedway and Ross Bailes, of Clover, South Carolina, secured the $10,053 first place prize money! Ross knocked down the sixth fastest time overall during the qualifying session prior to claiming a victory in the third heat race of the evening. After rolling off from the inside of the second row in the 53-lap feature, Ross came out on top of a spirited, three-car battle for the lead around the halfway mark and raced to his third career Southern Nationals triumph.

Youngster Luke Morey led the first 25 circuits from the outside of the front row before Schaeffer’s Oil Spring Nationals Series Champion Garrett Smith took command to lead laps 26-28. Ross Bailes then made the winning pass on lap 29 and held off a hard charging Chris Ferguson, of Mount Holly, North Carolina, in the waning laps to win by 0.521 of a second at the checkered flag.
It was almost “Fergy Time” at the Mount Hope, West Virginia venue, but his rally from the fifth starting spot came up just shy and Chris was forced to settle for a $5,000 payday for the runner-up effort. Zack Dohm, of Cross Lanes, West Virginia, was right there with the leaders at the checkers and was awarded $3,000 for his third place podium performance. Luke Morey came home in the fourth spot after leading early, while Jimmy Owens steered the Big Frog Motorsports #58V entry past six competitors to grab the final position inside of the top five.

“I knew when I got behind lapped traffic in the closing laps that I slowed way down,” quoted Bailes, who was making only his second start aboard Brian Nuttall’s Double Nickel racecar. “I just couldn’t charge the corner as hard and Brian was telling me they were pretty close. I knew I better hit my marks and try to get around the lapped cars as fast as I could.”
The driver nicknamed “The Boss” won in Brian Nuttall’s #16 Double Nickel Race Car powered by a Cornett Racing Engine with sponsorship in part from Elite Marine Team, Morning Wood Lumber & Hardware, Bailes Construction, Shamrock Plus Visual Solutions, FK Rod Ends, BHR Fabrication, and American Racer Tires.

A total of 26 competitors were in the pit area at Beckley Motor Speedway for the first round of the 11-race Schaeffer’s Oil Southern National Series season. Garrett Smith topped the speed charts in both MRP Fantasy League Hot Laps and FK Rod Ends qualifying. The three heat races were won by Garrett Smith, Luke Morey, and Ross Bailes. The lone consolation event was captured by Jensen Ford.

Only two caution flags slowed the pace in the 53-lapper at Beckley Motor Speedway. The first came on lap 15 when Layton Sullivan and Jensen Ford tangled on the front stretch. The final yellow flag flew on lap 32 when Garrett Smith slowed with a flat left rear tire shortly after losing the lead to eventual victor Ross Bailes. The feature contest lasted 24 minutes with 15 starters completing the entire distance.

Round two of the Schaeffer’s Oil Southern Nationals Series presented by Coltman Farms Racing and fueled by Sunoco will take the cars and stars of the tour to the picturesque Wythe Raceway in Rural Retreat, Virginia on Saturday, July 12. Another $10,053 payday will be on the line at the 1/2-mile speedplant. Previous winners at Wythe include Dennis Franklin ('06), Chris Madden ('07 & '08), Vic Hill ('09), Austin Dillon ('11), Vic Hill ('12), Chris Madden ('13), Jonathan Davenport ('14), Billy Ogle, Jr. ('15), Dale McDowell ('16), Vic Hill ('17), Dale McDowell ('18), Brandon Overton ('19 & '20), Dale McDowell ('22 & '23), and Chris Madden ('24).
