White Wins NorCal Legends Thriller
The 2025 season at Redwood Acres Raceway kicked off Saturday night with a full night of action. Shafer’s Ace Hardware presented the event which featured the NorCal Legend Series, Mid-City Motor World Late Models, limited modifieds and bombers.
A strong field of 28 NorCal Legends timed in with Robby Czub from Rocklin set fast time with a 17.410. Carlee Austin, J.K. Kinney, Kylie Daniels and Brandon White were the heat race victors. The top two finishers in the B main event transferred to the 18-car starting field for the feature race. Trystan Mucci was the B main winner while J.K. Kinney held off James Gilliland to take the second and final transfer spot.
The invert for the 30-lap main event was eight which put Cole Brown from Ukiah and Deeahmee Malone from Sparks, Nevada on the front row. Brown jumped to the lead and began to pull away from the pack as Ukiah’s Kai Lovell moved by Malone for second on lap three. Malone continued to fall back as Pasco, Washington’s Ellie Musgrave, Eureka’s White and Sebastapol’s Cody Winchel all were able to move under and by him. White moved past Musgrave and by lap five the front five cars of Brown, Lovell, White, Musgrave and Winchel were single-file.
Lovell and White slowly began to close in on Brown while Winchel moved by Musgrave to fourth by lap 10. By halfway, the top three were nose-to-tail with Brown having his hands full holding off Lovell and White. After several laps, White moved by Lovell and began to pressure Brown for the top spot. The handling on Brown’s car began to fade as the laps ticked away and White was eventually able to take advantage and take the lead with Lovell following into second.
The lone caution flag flew with seven laps remaining when Malone spun in turns three and four. White retained the lead on the restart while Lovell stayed close in his tire tracks. Meanwhile, Brown continued to struggle as Winchel was able to move to third and Czub began to challenge for fourth.
Lovell stayed in touch with White to the white flag but was unable to make a move to take the lead. At the finish it was White taking the victory over Lovell. Winchel placed third while Czub was fourth and Musgrave beat Brown to the line in a photo finish for fifth.
Fast time for the Mid-City Motor World Late Models was Luke Hall with a 15.595. Brandon Barnwell was victorious in the heat race. Barnwell and Hall led the field to the green in the 65-lap main event but Hall was able to jump to the lead from the outside while Jerry Peterson moved by Barnwell for second.
The race was clean and green as Hall pulled out to a several second lead as Peterson and Barnwell fought for the runner-up position. Barnwell was able to eventually move into second but appeared to have his work cut out for him as Hall had a full straightaway lead. Hall maintained his lead until the final 20 laps when his car’s handling seemed to completely go away allowing Barnwell to close in on his bumper. Barnwell had just begun to challenge Hall on the inside when a red flag came due to a fire on Louie Shaha’s car. Thankfully the issue was not serious and Shaha was able to continue in the race.
Hall regained the lead on the restart but Barnwell still had better form and was able to take the lead in the final 10 laps. Hall was able to keep the margin close but could not muster a challenge and at the finish it was Barnwell winning over Hall, Peterson, Joe Bonomini and Shaha.
Landyn Collins was fast time for the limited modifieds with a 16.897. He won the heat race but it was his father Charlie Collins who took the feature win. Landyn Collins placed second over Luke Hall, Christian Sanchez and Gene O’Dell. Dustin Walters was quickest for the bombers in qualifying with an 18.601 time. Walters went on to take the win in both the heat race and main event. T.J. Sorrels finished second followed by Jimmy Sorrels.
