Thornton wins in Modified at Beatrice; finishes fifth in Silver Dollar Nationals at Huset's
After scoring Late Model and Street Stock victories the previous weekend, Ricky Thornton Jr. returned to action on Monday, taking on two new divisions—a Modified and a Stock Car—fielded by Jordan Grabouski.
Thornton stormed to victory in the Modified feature after starting 11th and came close to sweeping the night in the Stock Car division. Under a unique format splitting the Stock Cars into two features, he won the first stage and then opted to start at the rear of the second stage for bonus money, charging from 20th to finish 2nd.
On Tuesday, Thornton climbed back behind the wheel of the Koehler Motorsports machine for the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series-sanctioned Kosiski Family 53. Starting sixth in the $25,053-to-win main event, he was part of a thrilling battle at the front of the field, leading laps 37 through 39 before ultimately finishing third.
As the 15th annual Silver Dollar Nationals kicked off Thursday at South Dakota’s Huset’s Speedway, Thornton posted a runner-up result in the 40-lap opener and followed it up with a third-place finish on Friday.
Earning the fifth-starting position for Saturday night’s $75,000-to-win finale, Thornton was running in fifth when persistent rain forced officials to call the 80-lapper with 13 laps remaining.
Thornton is currently second in the latest LOLMDS point standings.
