Thompson ends Super Nationals just shy of Big Dance
During the first full week of September, Cody Thompson took on the famed IMCA Speedway Motors Super Nationals at Boone Speedway (Boone, Iowa).
Thompson’s No. 25c IMCA Modified was among a staggering 228 entries in the pits on Wednesday to kick off the Modified portion of the 41st annual event at the 1/3-mile oval. The Sioux City, Iowa, driver began the four-day Modified program with a second-place finish in his heat race after starting from the pole and getting up on the cushion. He started 25th in one of the night’s two feature events and moved steadily forward in the 25-lap race to score a 10th-place result.
On Thursday, Thompson finished fourth in his heat and repeated a fourth-place result in his B-Feature, precluding him from competing in one of the night’s two main events. The same evening, Thompson also finished ninth in the All-Star North Central 3 race, then drove from ninth to third in his All-Star Last Chance Qualifier. However, it was not enough to put him in the field for the following evening’s All-Star Invitational.
Friday saw Thompson drive from 10th to second in his heat race and win his LCQ to transfer to a 25-lap A-Main. He started 14th and worked his way forward six positions to come home eighth.
On Saturday, with part of the “Big Dance” lineup already set through the previous three nights’ A-Main events, three Last Chance Qualifiers helped round out the remainder of the field for the 40-lap, $10,000-to-win finale. Thompson started on the pole in his 20-lap race but did not finish and was scored 13th, bringing his 2023 Super Nationals to a close.
