Sanders posts USMTS top-10 finishes in Amarillo Ambush, wins Limited Mod feature

Texas native Rodney Sanders raced in two classes in his home state on Friday and Saturday at Route 66 Motor Speedway. The driver originally from Happy, Texas, picked up two Summit USMTS top-10 finishes at the 3/8-mile Amarillo oval, while also grabbing the checkered flag in USRA Limited Modified action.

In the topless USMTS portion of the 11th annual Amarillo Ambush, Sanders took on a 51-car field on Friday and was one of 50 competitors on Saturday.

On Friday evening, he drove his Wichita Tank Racing No. 20 Modified to third in his heat race and grabbed the win in his B-Feature. He then started 13th in the 40-lap, $5,000-to-win main event and came home sixth.

The next night, Sanders posted a sixth-place result in his heat and nabbed third in his B-Main, starting him 18th in the feature paying another $5,000 to win. He charged ahead 10 spots in the 50-lapper to finish eighth.

He is currently third in the USMTS National Championship standings.

Meanwhile, in the nearly 30-car Limited Modified competition at Route 66, Sanders piloted his No. 02 ride to a pair of heat-race wins on Friday. Those results put him in the second spot to start Saturday’s 25-lap A-Main. He led every circuit of the main event to take the checkered flag 1.379 seconds in front of Jeffrey Kaup. Jeremy Gossett, Braden Elliott and Adam Beckner completed the top five.

The win was worth $2,500 and was Sanders’ 13th feature triumph overall in 2024.
