Texas Spring Nationals at Rocket Raceway Park Up Next
WICHITA, Kan. (03/03/25) – Showing no signs of off-season rust, Tanner Mullens soared to his first win of the season this past weekend in his 2025 debut aboard his Mel Hambelton Ford / Sandlian Iron & Metal Auto Salvage No. 02 Mullens Racing Chassis Modified.
The $2,000 American Racer Modified Series triumph came in the opening round of the Texas Winter Nationals on Thursday night at Heart O’ Texas Speedway.
“I had really good cars behind me that I held off,” said Mullens in Victory Lane. “I seen Rodney (Sanders) and Jim (Chisholm) and a bunch of them at one point. I feel pretty good about it and hopefully pretty good about tomorrow. Hopefully this is an outlook on our year.”
As February rolled into March, Tanner Mullens began his 2025 racing season with three days of Modified competition for the 10th annual Texas Winter Nationals. The Wichita, Kansas native's weekend was highlighted by an opening night victory, along with two podium finishes on Friday and Saturday.
On Thursday, Mullens was part of a 51-car field on hand for the USRA American Racer Modified Series (ARMS) season opener. He drove his No. 02 machine from third to grab the win in his heat race, then started the 30-lap main event from the fourth spot. He battled near the front for much of the caution-filled race, before finally taking the lead for good on the 22nd circuit. He never looked back and grabbed the $2,000 victory as he crossed the start-finish line 0.509 seconds in front of Jim Chisholm. Third place went to Rodney Sanders, with Carlos Ahumada Jr. and Kale Westover rounding out the top five.
The next two nights, the Summit USMTS National Championship season got underway with a pair of $5,000-to-win shows as part of the Texas Winter Nationals.
Mullens began the 48-car Friday portion of the event with a first-place effort in his qualifying group and a fourth-place finish in his heat. He went on to win his B-Main and began the feature from 13th on the grid. He charged ahead 10 positions in the 40-lapper and finished third, taking the checkered flag behind Jim Chisholm and Sanders. Joe Chisholm finished fourth and Kyle Strickler took the fifth spot.
Mullens continued his strong weekend on Saturday, when 43 USMTS Modifieds descended on Heart O' Texas Speedway. He grabbed the win in his heat and rolled off from the fourth starting spot in the 40-lap main event. He led six laps in the race and ultimately came home as runner-up, 0.793 seconds behind Joe Chisholm. Terry Phillips, Sanders and Reece Solander completed the top five.
With the first weekend of USMTS action in the books, Mullens sits second in the point standings, with a deficit of just three markers to leader Joe Chisholm. Mullens is also the ARMS points leader.
