Poirier Perfect in SCoNE Thriller at Albany-Saratoga
Big crowd watches Canadian survive late battles to go 2-for-2
MALTA, New York (June 15, 2025) – Jordan Poirier may want to reconsider his plans for the 2025 season. While he does not intend to compete on the full circuit for the McGee Automotive Family Sprint Cars of New England Tour (SCoNE) in 2025, he has yet to lose a race this year.
The Canadian driver was the perfect combination of fast and lucky at Albany-Saratoga Speedway on Friday, June 13, randomly drawing the pole position starting spot in both his qualifying heat and the 25-lap A-Main, sweeping victories in both, and marking a repeat of his performance in the SCoNE Tour season opener at Airborne Park Speedway in April.
The Albany-Saratoga race – which was presented by Blair Construction and Chartrand Trucking – was the debut for the SCoNE group at the historic Malta, NY track, and it attracted an impressive grandstand crowd and a full field of 24 cars. The track surface was fast and trouble-free, producing entertaining side-by-side racing.
For the A-Main, Poirier, the reigning three-time Empire Super Sprints (ESS) champion from St-Mathieu-de-Beloeil, QC, stretched out to an early lead. A yellow flag for a minor crash on lap 4 between Fred Proctor and Jake Williams gave the field a shot to keep Poirier in its sights, and lapped traffic at mid-race allowed Fonda, NY’s Danny Varin to reel him in. Varin was dicing with Poirier for the lead when the second caution flew on lap 20 for Caiden Herbert’s driveshaft failure, and from that point it was anyone’s guess who would finish up front.
As Poirier led with Varin close behind, Matt Tanner, Dalton Rombough, and overachieving underdog Travis Billington traded slide jobs and swapped positions through the balance of the top-five. Billington appeared to be ready for a podium finish, but two late cautions changed that for him as his car began to sputter while low on fuel. A yellow for Jeff Trombley’s spin on lap 23 set up a disastrous restart that saw the entire field bunch up, sending both Chris Donnelly and Nick Kruger skyward as their cars flipped multiple times; neither was seriously injured.
Poirier was able to scoot away over the final two laps following the restart, beating Varin for the win. Rombough and Tanner each came from a mid-pack start to finish third and fourth, respectively, while Billington coasted home fifth with his fuel cell dry. Chase Moran finished sixth and defending SCoNE champion Matt Hoyt drove from 18th to finish seventh, followed by Scott Holcomb, Chad Miller, and Will Hull.
RACE NOTES:
• A field of 24 cars attended the Albany-Saratoga Speedway event. Nine drivers made their first SCoNE appearance of the year. The field was comprised of cars and drivers from six U.S. states – Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, and Vermont – and the Canadian province of Québec.
• Jordan Poirier’s victory was his second consecutive to open the 2025 SCoNE season and was the third overall of his SCoNE career.
• The three qualifying heat races were won by Poirier, Will Hull, and Chase Moran.
• Chris Downs Motorsports presented the Hard Charger Award, with a $50 bonus going to 2024 McGee SCoNE Tour champion Matt Hoyt, who started 18th and finished seventh to gain 11 positions.
• Tyler Chartrand won a $50 bonus from Dave Bowser Motorsports as the top-finishing registered rookie in 11th place; fellow rookie Mark Reynolds finished 16th.
• Kadyn Berry was in the top-10 in practice speed but crashed into the wall in his qualifying heat, causing damage to his top wing and rear suspension. His team made hasty but effective repairs with a short turnaround before the feature, and Berry officially gained 10 positions with a solid drive through traffic.
• Kyle Smith turned heads in practice by posting a quick lap that was nearly four-tenths of a second faster than anyone else, but a broken brake line in qualifying resulted in major damage that forced him to end his night after just two laps in the feature race.
• Two former SCoNE champions, Shawn Lawler and Tunk Berry, returned to competition on Friday night. Berry was sixth-fastest in practice but dropped out of the feature early and finished 20th. Lawler was caught up in the final crash and endured major wing damage, relegating him to a 17th-place finish.
• Through the first two events of the McGee Automotive Family SCoNE Tour schedule, Jordan Poirier is the championship leader with 120 points. Matt Tanner is second at 100, followed by Chase Moran (91), Travis Billington (85), and Matt Hoyt (77).
The McGee Automotive Family Sprint Cars of New England Tour is back in action at Bear Ridge Speedway in Bradford, VT, on Saturday, June 28. To learn more about the Sprint Cars of New England, visit www.nesprintcars.com or find the “SCoNE – Sprint Cars of New England” page on Facebook.
