Peter Ends Long Dry Spell At Deer Creek

Spring Valley, MN (August 10)
By: Todd Narveson

The Deer Creek Speedway held the annual Veterans Night on Saturday. The event honors military veterans and those who are serving in the armed forces. It is also a fundraiser DAV (Disabled American Veterans) Mayo Southeast Chapter 28.

Rochester Chevrolet-Cadillac provided free admission for the veterans and their guest. There were also 50/50 ticket sales, a silent and live auction, t-shirt sales and a push-up challenge for the five feature winners. Randy & Sandy Norby were also a sponsor for the evening.

Rochester Chevrolet-Cadillac also added an extra $1000 to each of the five feature races. The winner received and extra $150, second $125, third through fifth were awarded $75 and sixth through tenth got and extra $50 added to their pay.

Thirty-nine Kid’s Dreams Come True were whittled down to a 26-car field for their 18-lap main event. Harley Dais took off from row one to take the lead. Jayden Larson tried to keep pace with Dais, but then had to deal with Dustin Kruse.

Kruse would get to second and was close with the leader on lap eight. A yellow then came out and then on the restart a 10-car pileup on the frontstretch that blocked the track. Severa cars were knocked out of contention in the melee.

After that, Dais cruised to seventh win in 2024. Kruse finished second with Larson in third. Noah Grinstead finished in fourth and Garitt Wytaske rounded out the top five. Dais did 57-push ups worth $23 a piece for the DAV.

The Meadow Greens Golf Course USRA Hobby Stocks had another tremendous 18-lap main event. The drama would continue to the post-race tech inspection after the race. Blake Schneekloth led the 17-car field to the green flag.

Krysta Doughty and Devin Holthaus made it three wide for the lead with Schneekloth on the first lap. Schneekloth held the lead with Doughty second and Holthaus in the mix. Eyes were on Luke Schluetter who started 16th after not making the call for his heat race.

Schluetter charged to fourth on lap seven before a yellow flag one lap later. The leaders went three wide again with Dustin Gulbrandson up front. Two caution flags halted the race on lap 10. Schluetrer bolted to second on the start and then challenged Gulbrandson.

Schluetter took the lead on lap 14 and Nick Schweback entered the picture in third. The top three raced close the final four laps with Schluetter ahead at the checkered flag by .125 over Gulbrandson followed by Schwebach, Doughty and Schneekloth in the top five.

During post-race inspection Schluetter was disqualified for an illegal shim and Schneekloth was also disqualified for and alternator that did not meet the rules. So that handed the win to Gulbrandson with Schwebach second. Doughty moved up to third, with Ryan Goergen and Adam Speicher in the top five. Before the issue in tech, Schluetter did 35-push ups for the DAV.

Barry Johnson led the first eight laps of the Dirt Doctor Trucking WISSOTA Midwest Modified feature. Johnson got a bit loose in turn four on the eighth lap and Mitch Weiss slipped past for the lead. Weiss would then open up a big lead.

Weiss would lead the rest of the way for his 15th career Deer Creek win. Kadden Kath made a late race charge from ninth to second. Justin Seipel got to third while Billy Steinberg was fourth and Johnson ended up fifth.

The Rochester Chevrolet-Cadillac USRA Stock Car feature was a dandy as well. Andrew Bleess led early, but his car shot up the track to allow Shawn Peter and Brandon Hare to slip past. Peter got to the lead on lap four but Hare would again challenge.

Behind them Bleess battle with Kyle Falck for third. Peter ran the extreme high line and opened up a little lead. Hare, Falck and Brayden Gjere had a great race for second. On lap 12, Falck threw a slider at Hare to take second. Hare crossed back over a claimed second once again.

Gjere was on the move and went three wide with Hare and Falck for second as the trio was close to Peter. Gjere got to second with two to go. Gjere threw a slider on Peter in turn two on the final lap to take. Peter dove low and too the lead in turn three.

Gjere closed back in on Peter and executed another slide job in turn three. With the checkered flag in the air, Peter dove low and edged Gjere for his first win at Deer Creek since July 23, 2015. Hare would finish in third with Falck fourth and Blees in fifth. Peter then did 27-push ups the same as his car number in victory lane.

Brandon Davis took the lead at the start of the 25-lap NAPA Auto Care Centers USRA Modified feature. Davis was chased by Joe Chisholm when they entered lapped traffic on lap eight. Davis clipped the wall in turn two and Chisholm slipped by. Davis would reclaim the lead on lap 12 before a caution flag came out.

The race then had several cautions that slowed the race just past the mid-way point of the race. On the lap 16 restart, Chisholm threw a slide on Davis for the lead in turn two. Davis returned the favor in turn four to retake the lead. Chisholm fired right back and took the lead. Dustin Sorensen was right with the lead duo.

Davis would take the lead in turn four and Chisholm shot below him our of four. The duo made contact and Chisholm took the lead. After that, Chisholm led the final laps for his eighth win of the season. Davis finished second with Sorensen third. Josh Angst and Parker Hale would round out the top five. Chisholm then did 100-push ups for the DAV.
