Corey Zeitner flies Malvern Bank Late Model checkers at Shelby County Speedway
By Anthony Ainslie (Harlan, IA) -- Corey Zeitner found his way to victory lane for the second time after a wild night on the high banks of Harlan Saturday night.
Round 18 of the 2019 season for the Malvern Bank Super Late Model Series was back in the state of Iowa as the tour returned to the Shelby County Fairgrounds in Harlan. The race was rescheduled after initially being set for May 18th. A total of 34 cars made the trip to Harlan, and when qualifying was all said and done, 25 cars took center stage for the 25-lap main event.
Corey Zeitner jumped from the pole position to secure the lead early on, and that would be where he would stay all race long. The Bellevue, Nebraska native nailed his marks on multiple restarts after multiple cautions slowed the pace in the early laps.
A big incident came at the halfway mark when Robbie Andersen rolled his car in turn one. Fortunately, Andersen was uninjured, but his night was done resulting in a 22nd place finish.
As the laps continued to wind down, Zeitner continued to lead while point leader Kyle Berck challenged him for the lead. Not long after, Justin Zeitner joined in on the race for the lead.
With six laps to go, Berck and Zeitner made contact, which sent Zeitner into the wall bringing out the final caution of the race. Berck was sent to the rear for the involvement in the incident. Berck and Zeitner finished 18th and 22nd in the final order.
Meanwhile, Corey Zeitner was firing on all cylinders and hitting his marks all race long. Zeitner went on to score the win and the $2,000 that went with it. It was Corey’s first Malvern Bank Series win at the Shelby County Fairgrounds, his second win of 2019, and his seventh career series win putting him in a tie with two-time series champion Travis Dickes for fourth on the all-time win list.
Ben Schaller came home in second giving him a boost in the point standings cutting into Berck’s 70-point advantage. Also, Charlie McKenna came from 15th to finish third. Jason Rauen took fourth, and Josh Leonard, who won the first Malvern Bank show at Harlan this year, rounded out the top five.
Only three races remain in the 2019 season for the Malvern Bank Super Late Model Series. The tour returns to action on Sunday, September 8 when the series takes part in the Nebraska Cup at Eagle Raceway in Eagle, Nebraska. The tour follows that race up with the 2nd annual Midwest Mobile Tech 22 at the Knoxville Raceway in Knoxville, Iowa on September 14. The series’ final race will be back at the I-80 Speedway in Greenwood, Nebraska for the Speedway Motors Cornhusker Classic on October 12.
