Martin Wins Legends.Direct 10K Dirt Showdown

Beaver Dam, WI (July 27th, 2025) - Preston Martin came into this weekend with a lot on the line. The driver from North Dakota potentially gave up a track championship back home and took the risk. With his friends and family behind him, he pulled out of Beaver Dam Raceway $10,000 richer than when he entered after winning the Legends.Direct 10K Dirt Showdown with the Midwest Legends Dirt Series.

It was another sixty-car field on Saturday. Weather loomed but Scott Boyd and the entire Beaver Dam crew made sure the track survived, bracing two separate rain showers prior to the event starting. For a track that may be closing, the fans flocked to the Dam and showed up in style, with the grandstands packed by race time.

The previous night’s feature winner Tanner Jones came out swinging in Fall River Foundry Qualifying, taking the top spot, three-tenths faster than anyone else. Eric Blumer was second with Jackson Lewis third. Michael Weber and Steve Partin rounded out the top five.

Eight N&S Towing Heat Races saturated racing for the night. Jones, Blumer, Martin, Weber, Partin, Hayden Schmuhl, Cal Swenson, and Glenn Mitchell took the wins. Dallas Ross, Keith Moline, Lewis, Baiden Heskett, Ryan Mech, Quade Schoonover, Carson Grob, and Parker Jones all locked themselves into the A-Main through heat races as well.

Six semi-features were up next. Alex Kukowski and Davey Pennel took home the two D-Mains. Adam Zellmer took the win in C-Main One, which is making waves for a crash at the end, where two cars rolled over violently. We are happy to report both drivers are alright after the scary wreck; Levi Morris took the win in the other C-Main. Fastline Design and Graphics B-Mains were won by Ryan Swisshelm and Talyn Neuman in the end, locking themselves in.

A draw after heat races determined Blumer and Partin would make up the front row of the Legends.Direct 10K Dirt Showdown. An iconic four-wide salute began the feature, with all credit going to the drivers who executed it perfectly after being informed about it only minutes prior. The green flew after and Partin got the jump, taking the lead while Blumer went three-wide with Schmuhl and Swenson. Blumer and Schmuhl made the most of it, but Martin was right on their tails, looking for a top spot. Schmuhl managed to pull in Partin out front and the battle for the lead was on. Schmuhl held the car low while Partin worked a middle groove. Schmuhl took the lead and held on as Martin began to work on Partin. It was quick work for the #77 who used Partin’s middle line to pass him, moving into second and began chasing down Schmuhl for the lead. Martin got to Schmuhl’s outside on lap six, with Schmuhl narrowly holding onto the spot but losing it on lap seven. Martin took over at the front while Partin got to Schmuhl and put the pressure on for second. Further back the battle heated up for the final top five spot. Weber went to work on Swenson, and he brought Heskett with him. Both made it past the #19X as did Neuman, who was already up to seventh from his eighteenth starting spot. Attention went back upfront as Partin began really working Schmuhl, getting the spot on lap thirteen. Partin grew the gap while Schmuhl began fading back to the grasps of Blumer, Weber, and Heskett. Caution flew for the first time as the #32 of Robby Morrison slowed to a stop down the front straight. A push off the track for Morrison awaited as the field got back in formation. Martin on a row to himself led the field to green, while Partin and Schmuhl formed up behind. Weber and Neuman got the best start out of anyone, jumping up spots and moving forward, Weber to third and Neuman up to fifth, then a further fourth. Caution flew laps later for Swisshelm, who spun to a stop in turn three. Martin led Partin and Weber back to green with eight laps left. Eyes turned back as Heskett moved into fifth and began moving more forward. A quick yellow allowed him to jump to fourth on the restart before another setting up a dramatic finish. A two-lap shootout decided the fate of $10,000. Martin led the field back to green single file. Partin got to the inside of Martin on the final lap after a very costly mistake from the leader. The two raced down the back straight away and Partin tried one last lunge through turns three and four, but to no avail.

Preston Martin hopped out of the car, with an immeasurable amount of elation. “Grateful.. Sums it up pretty damn well.” Said a winded Martin in victory lane when asked the emotions going on. “My wife's gonna want to finish the basement” he said when asked where the 10K was going. Steve Partin came home second, “You gotta race with dollars in mind and it was settle for five [thousand] or lose five so I was pretty happy with second.” Partin said post-race. Baiden Heskett rounded out the podium, “We struggled all weekend and decided to throw the kitchen sink at it, and it worked!” Heskett said in his post-race interview. Weber came home fourth with Lewis rounding out the top five.

During post-race technical inspection, an infringement was discovered on Baiden Heskett’s #75, resulting in a disqualification. Weber would be promoted to third, Lewis to fourth, and Schmuhl to fifth. Results are official after the return of parts taken for routine further inspection at INEX Headquarters. Neuman was promoted to Professional Plating Hard Charger after the disqualification.

The Midwest Legends Dirt Series returns to action this coming Saturday, August 2nd, as the series makes its Illinois debut at Sycamore Speedway.
