Friesen Fast: Stewart Friesen Pockets $10,000 at Le RPM STSS Stop
SAINT-MARCEL-DE-RICHELIEU, QUEBEC – Friesen fast.
On Wednesday night at Le RPM Speedway, Stewart Friesen of Sprakers, N.Y., drove to a $10,000 payday in the Bob Hilbert Sportswear Short Track Super Series (STSS) Fueled By Sunoco ‘Lumberjack Swing’ Round No. 2.
The victory allowed Friesen to maintain his lead in the HYTORC of New York North Region STSS Modified point standings entering the month of August.
Friesen, who placed runner-up the night before at Autodrome Granby, rebounded in style at the tight-but-racy RPM quarter-mile oval with the Sunoco checkered flag.
“Thanks to all these great race fans,” Friesen said acknowledging the packed grandstands after his 54th career series victory.
“I just missed on the setup. It got way slicker than I thought it would get. We were way too free, but I could fire off on restarts good.”
Friesen, who started fourth, was the event’s third different leader.
Pole starter Michael Parent led the opening 10 laps before David Hebert worked the inside lane in turns one and two.
Friesen followed Hebert into the runner-up spot and began his pursuit of the pace setter at lap 11.
Following a lap-16 restart, Friesen took over a lead he would hold for the remaining 44 laps, surviving lapped traffic and multiple restarts within the final five laps.
“I got a good one (restart) to slip by David and I just tried to run my race,” Friesen added.
Matt Sheppard, who started 14th, made his ascent through the field, clearing Hebert for second with just two laps remaining.
The Savannah, N.Y., driver finished with a $5,000 runner-up finish.
“We had a pretty darn good car,” Sheppard surmised. “To come from 14th to second here, it’s a pretty tough place to pass. Everybody is jammed up, it’s a small track. We were able to pass a lot of cars on the top and bottom and bring home a really good finish.”
Quebec’s Hebert, a first-year follower of the HYTORC of New York North Region, continued his strong efforts in third, followed by Parent and an emerging Chris Raabe, the Ontario driver who wheeled forward to a fifth-place result.
Quebec’s Steve Bernier, who started third, finished sixth, followed by fifth-starter Samuel Charland; Covington Township, Pa.’s Alex Yankowski; Mat Williamson of Saint Catharines, Ont., in the Behrent’s Performance Warehouse No. 3; and Christopher Cormier, up from 13th.
A field of 30 STSS Modifieds checked in for competition.
Heat winners were Friesen, Parent, Williamson and Hebert.
The ATL Fuel Cells Hot Lap Hero was Raabe with a new-track-record lap of 12.983 seconds.
Attention now turns to back-to-back nights at Can-Am Motorsports Park in LaFargeville, N.Y., on Monday, Aug. 4 and Mohawk International Raceway in Akwesasne, N.Y., on Tuesday, Aug. 5 with back-to-back events for the HYTORC of New York Modified North region and Madsen Overhead Doors Inc. Sportsman North Region.
