“Money Mat” Williamson Holds off Roy, Mahaney in “Battle of Plattsburgh”
After being postponed due to rain a couple of weeks ago, the DirtCar 358 Series and DirtCar Sportsman Series East Region competitors rolled into the Airborne Park Speedway for their season opener Thursday night. When the dust settled, “Money Mat” Williamson and Zach Buff earned wins in their respective divisions.
In the “Battle of Plattsburg,” the 75 lap feature for the 358 modifieds, “The Adam Bomb,” Adam Pierson and Jordan McCreadie led the field to the green flag. McCreadie went to the point straight out of the gate and stayed there until lap 13. That’s when Jarrett Herbison blew past him on the inside and took command. By the 16th circuit, Williamson had worked his way to the second spot and was eager to strike. Herbison didn’t make it easy, however, as he held off the former series champion until just over the midway point. On a restart on lap 45, Williamson swept to the outside of Herbison off of turn two and powered past him down the backstretch to take the lead. “Hollywood” Felix Roy came from his fifth starting spot to challenge Williamson. Roy was gifted the perfect opportunity on a lap 64 restart after red flag conditions were declared after a power issue, but he couldn’t quite get the job done. Williamson pulled away in the closing laps to collect the $5,000 paycheck. Roy crossed the line second. Mike Mahaney rallied from the 25th starting spot to nab third. Herbison and last week’s winner at “The Big A,” Jeremy Roy completed the top 5.
The “Champlain Valley Showdown” for the sportsman cars came with a little added intrigue. Donovan Lussier crossed the finish line first in the 40-lap event, but his celebration was short-lived. Lussier and runner-up Vince Quenneville Jr. were disqualified after failing a post-race inspection, which revealed they did not use the required VP D98 fuel in their machines. The misfortune for Lussier and Quenneville was Zach Buff’s gain as the Latham, New York campaigner was awarded the victory and the $1,500 winner’s purse. While Lussier, Quenneville, and early leader Travis Bruno were battling up front, Buff was navigating his way through the pack. Buff started 15th and had moved to fourth by lap 11. On lap 13, Buff captured the third spot, putting himself in position to be the beneficiary of the DQ of Lussier and Quenneville. Michael Wright was moved up to the second spot, Codie Aubin third, Bruno fourth, and Bucko Branham fifth.
A week ago, Lea-Jeanne Lauziere seemed poised to take a feature win in the limited sportsman classification. After leading a majority of the race, Lauziere was chased down by Kobe Hernandez and recovered from a spin to garner a top-five finish. This week, Lauziere would not be denied, taking advantage of starting on the pole, grabbing the lead early, and outlasting the remainder of the combatants to park the No. 28L in victory lane. Lauziere jumped to the lead as soon as the green flag waved and quickly established a 12-car length lead over Garin Thompson. She continued to extend her advantage from there and was never challenged to capture her first-ever limited sportsman victory. Thompson was second, Kobe Hernandez third, Parker Dermody fourth, and Sarah-Ann Lauziere fifth.
Defending track champion Shawn Duquette picked up his second win of the season in the feature event for the 9th State Cannabis Renegades. Tim Wilcox and Tyler Irwin led the field to the start from the front row, but Duquette didn’t waste any time. The Morrisonville, New York competitor charged from the seventh position on the grid to the point in just four laps. Duquette began to put some real estate between his car and Irwin’s, but caution flew on lap seven to tighten up the field. This began a series of yellow flag sessions over the next few laps with Irwin continuing to challenge Duquette for the lead, while Tylor Terry moved through the field and was lurking in third. While Irwin and Terry engaged in a fierce fight for the second position, Duquette drove off into the night, putting on a clinic on how to hug the inside line. Terry finally disposed of Irwin and closed to within three car lengths at the stripe, but Duquette held on for the win. Irwin held on for third, Nate Guay fourth, and Josh Terry fifth.
The final two races on the card were a pair of 15-lap main events for the mini stocks. The field was split into two groups based on handicap. The first feature started with a bang as multiple cars got caught up in a melee in turn two on the opening lap. Another pile-up in turn two after the restart led to more attrition of the field. Jeremiah King showed the way early but was overtaken by Glenn Engstrom on lap six. Engstrom lost the rear end and went around in turn two, however, bringing out yet another caution. King appeared as though he would pull away to punch his ticket to victory lane, but his car faded, and Tyler Warren slipped past him with two laps remaining. Warren held on for his first career mini stock win. Junior Laporte was second, Speedy Bresette third, Cody Young fourth, and King fifth.
In the finale, Ryan Senecal avoided an early race multi-car crash and advanced from the eighth starting position to earn his third win of the season. Senecal got around Tyler Bell on the backstretch on lap eight and pulled away for the win. His teammate, points leader Jake Fountain, got past Bell to take the second spot, but could not run the defending champion down. Bell placed third. Kyle Botala and Joshua Blake rounded out the top five. Airborne Park Speedway is located at 70 Broderick Road in Plattsburgh, NY.
