Hunt Wingless Spec Sprints Back At Antioch Speedway For Cameron Martin Memorial Saturday Night

Antioch, CA...On the heels of the successful Fan Appreciation Night last week, Antioch Speedway has another big show lined up for this Saturday night. It's the second of four scheduled appearances by the Hunt Wingless Spec Sprint Series, and it's also the Cameron Martin Memorial race.

This event remembers Cameron Martin, who's been a part of the Hunt Series and Antioch's own Wingless Spec Sprint effort in recent years. This race boasts a $17,000 purse and will pay $2511 to the winner. Just taking the green flag in the Main Event will assure a driver a minimum of $511 at the pay window.

Joining the Hunt Series for this show will be the Dwarf Cars, Mini Stocks and the Hardtops.

The Hunt Wingless Spec Sprint Series is celebrating their 15th Anniversary season with a schedule that has seen them compete at six different tracks in their first six races. Antioch Speedway will be the first repeat track on this year's schedule. This is the second of four appearances for the group, and it's a big money occasion.

The last time the group was in Antioch, Jake Morgan of Fair Oaks was collecting the victory ahead of Roseville's Josh Young, Antioch point leader Bob Newberry of Brentwood, Brent Steck of Roseville and Eathon Lanfri of Milpitas. Morgan had a strong start to his season by winning three of the first four races, and that had him leading the standings going into last week's race at Marysville.

As of this writing, the standings haven't been updated, but the battle at the top is sure to get tighter. Steck grabbed his first win of the season at Maryville last week with Lanfri a season-high second over Boy Moniz of Waianae, HI. Both Steck and Lanfri lead the series with five Top 5 efforts in six races, and Steck has a pair of seconds and a third in addition to his win. He has finished as high as second in series points as he pursues his first championship.

The competition level for this race is expected to be so high that a B Main may be necessary to earn the final Main Event starting spots. The roster of competitors is impressive. In addition to Morgan, Steck and Lanfri, top rookie Bradon Moniz of Waianae, HI, Newberry, Sacramento's Paul Vandenberg, Kevin Box of Discovery Bay, Yuba City's Josh Wooten, Jeff Scotto of Antioch and Daniel DeKeyser of Kelseyville made up the balance of the Top 10 going into the Marysville race.

The Dwarf Cars enter their fourth race of the season with Brentwood's Sean Catucci on a roll. Sean has three wins in four starts, putting him into the point lead. With both rookie David Hays of Brentwood and reigning champion Travis Day of Concord also having four Top 5 finishes this year, Catucci still has a little bit of pressure in the point battle.

Hays is on the brink of his first feature win as he is coming off of back-to-back second place finishes to keep him within 24 points of the lead. Day is only eight points behind Hays in what is currently a three-car championship battle. Antioch's David Rosa is currently fourth with Brandon Aylesworth of Suisun City running fifth after his third place finish at the latest race.

Santa Rosa's Tom Brown continues to be one of the top drivers on the Mini Stock circuit with five wins between Antioch and Petaluma. While a Main Event scratch two races ago at Petaluma dropped him to third in a close battle there, his two Antioch wins gives him a 28 point advantage over Jackie Price of Antioch going into this race. In fact, Price is tied for second with rookie Ryder Holmen of Antioch, who's hoping to rebound from a Main Event crash at their most recent race in May.

Two-time reigning champion Joel Hannagan of San Jose has had an eventful season in the Doug Braudrick owned Junkyard Dog Hardtop. The season opener ended with a Main Event DNF. They made a trip to Merced a few days prior to the recent Antioch race and grabbed a victory in a wild finish that saw him crashing across the finish line. All was not right with the car as they patched it up to run the recent race, but Hannagan still collected his 20th career Antioch Hardtop victory.

Sporting a new orange paint job and the #4 that has been run by both his nephew Mike Slaney and Mike's son Anthony, Don Slaney of Martinez has now picked up a pair of second place finishes and finds himself only six points behind Hannagan in the point race. Merced point leader Mike Gillard of Atwater sits third in the standings by six ahead of Joe Shenefield of Roseville. Shenefield rebounded nicely from his rollover at the opener by grabbing a checkered flag in third at the recent race.

When the Hunt Wingless Spec Sprint Series comes to town, it's always an exciting race. The Cameron Martin Memorial should be no different as the drivers compete for a greatly increased purse. The Dwarf Cars, Mini Stocks and Hardtops should help make this a fun night once again at Antioch Speedway.

The gates will open at 4:00 with the first race starting at 6:00.

Adult tickets are $15, Senior/Military $15, Kids (5-12) $15 and kids four and under free.
