Morgan Wins Hunt Series, Baugh Wins Hobby Stock Thriller At Antioch Speedway
Antioch, CA...July 26...Jake Morgan of Fair Oaks won the 25 lap Hunt Magnetos Wingless Spec Sprint Main Event Saturday night at Antioch Speedway. The third visit of the season for the tour was also Back To School Backpack Night in which several backpacks and other school supplies were given to kids during intermission. Morgan is the current point leader for the series, and this was his sixth win of the season.
Jimmy Christian of Morgan Hill set the early pace ahead of Morgan and Bob Newberry of Brentwood. A Turn 4 pass on Lap 3 put Josh Young of Roseville into third, and the lead four cars pulled away from the pack. However, a crash in Turn 4 of the sixth lap collected Newberry and also involved Daniel DeKeyser of Kelseyville, Kevin Box of Bethel Island and Santa Rosa's Carson Hawkins. Christian continued to lead Morgan and Young on the restart.
A low pass and Turn 4 of the 11th lap gained Morgan the lead with Young also getting around Christian for second. Championship contender Eathon Lanfri of Milpitas and Braidon Moniz of Waianae, HI tangled in Turn 4 for a Lap 13 yellow flag. Young continued to lead Morgan and Christian on the ensuing restart. Josh Wooten of Yuba City brought out the final yellow flag on Lap 18 with motor issues. Morgan led Young on the restart as Anthony Bruno of San Jose slipped into third. Morgan pulled away in the closing laps to win ahead of Young, Bruno, Tristan Guardino of Fremont and Christian.
Jared Baugh of Pittsburg won the 20 lap Pacific Coast Hobby Stock Main Event. Baugh was locked in a thrilling battle with Aidan Ponciano of Oakley in which the duo exchanged the lead multiple time. Baugh won with a last lap pass and became the third different driver to win a Main Event in his car this year.
Baugh set the early pace ahead of Ponciano and incoming point leader Grayson Baca of Brentwood. The leaders caught slower traffic on the fourth lap, and Ponciano used it to make a low pass in Turn 4 to take the lead from Baugh. A yellow flag waved moments later for debris on the track. Ponciano continued to lead Baugh on the restart with Daniel Braudrick of Vacaville settling into third. A low pass in Turn 4 of the ninth lap regained Baugh the lead, but Ponciano used his momentum on the outside to reclaim the spot in Turn 2 a lap later.
The leaders were dealing with heavy traffic during the second half of the race, and Baugh used it to make an inside pass on the backstretch on Lap 14 to take the lead. An inside move in Turn 4 of the 17th lap put Ponciano ahead once again. On the final lap, Baugh had the momentum on the inside as they raced down the backstretch and used it to take the lead from Ponciano for good. Baugh went on to victory ahead of Ponciano, Braudrick, Baca and Charlie Bryant of Oakley.
Multi-time Dwarf Car champion Danny Wagner of Bay Point return to the Dwarf Car class and scored an impressive victory. Wagner is currently leading the IMCA Sport Modified State, Watsonville and Santa Maria point races and won another Sport Modified Main Event a night earlier at Watsonville.
Reigning champion Travis Day of Concord set the pace for a lap before Wagner went low in Turn 2 to grab the lead. Wagner proceeded to stretch his advantage to a straightaway before Toby Brown of Pleasanton and David Hays and Brentwood tangled in Turn 4 for the only yellow flag on Lap 8. Wagner resumed command on the restart and again built a straightaway advantage by the time the checkered flag flew. Day and point leader Sean Catucci of Brentwood had a spirited dual for second with Day coming out ahead at the checkered flag. David Hays of Brentwood and Brown completed the Top 5 at the finish.
Tom Brown of Santa Rosa continued his march toward the championship by winning his fourth Mini Stock Main Event.
Don Abitz of Pittsburg jumped into the early lead ahead of Brown and Matt Wirth of Oakland. An inside move down the frontstretch on Lap 3 put Brown into the lead, and he proceeded to pull away from there. Abitz and Wirth continued their close battle for second. As the duo was lapping a slower car in Turn 2, Wirth moved past Abitz to claim second. Brown lapped the whole field, and Wirth held off a last lap effort from Abitz to finish second. Ryder Holmen of Antioch and Lukas Castro of Stockton completed the Top 5.
Joel Hannagan of San Jose won the 15 lap Hardtop Main Event. This was the third-consecutive win for the current point leader and reigning champion.
Don Slaney of Martinez set the early pace ahead of Joe Shenefield of Roseville. An outside pass on the frontstretch on Lap 3 put Hannagan into second, and Hannagan went high in Turn 2 on Lap six to take the lead from Slaney. Hannagan pulled away from there to victory with Slaney settling for second ahead of Shenefield.
Racing will return on August 9th with the Workman Communications 50 for the Tri State Pro Stock Series. Also competing will be the Wingless Spec Sprints, Dwarf Cars, 600 Micro Sprints and Hardtops.
