CLARK DOUBLES UP ON M2 METALS MEET & GREET NIGHT AT FONDA
By: Ron Szczerba
Fonda, NY – Saturday evening at the “Track of Champions” Fonda Speedway was a special one for Cody Clark as he not only scored the victory in the Amsterdam Truck Center Modified feature but also scored a win in the M2 RUSH Crate Late Model division. The Modified win was the second of his career at Fonda in the Hoyenga Racing #4, his first career win in the division coming back on 7/15/2023 while the M2 RUSH Late Model win came in his first career start in a Late Model!
“This is my first time in this car,” Clark said in victory lane regarding his M2 RUSH Late Model victory. “This goes out to AJ and Eric Miller. I wasn’t even gonna race this car this weekend, but AJ and Eric kept hounding me, so I ended up racing it.”
“Joe (stater Joe Kriss) kept telling me that I was pretty far ahead,” Clark said during his Amsterdam Truck Center Modified victory lane interview. “But when Stewy (Stewart Friesen) is behind you, you know that he is going to be coming so every lap I just tried to push harder and harder. Thank you to Laudy Hoyenga, I wouldn’t be in a Modified if it wasn’t for him.”
Other winners on M2 Metals Meet & Greet Night included Tyler Peet (Swagger Factory Apparel Sportsman), Nick Stone (Leatherstocking Credit Union Pro Stocks), Camron Hotaling (Montgomery County Office for Aging Inc. Limited Sportsman), Wayne Russel Jr, (SOHC) and Jay Ingersoll (DOHC) in the Fonda Fair Four Cylinder division.
The Meet & Greet allowed the great crowd on hand to meet their favorite drivers who were lined up on the front stretch, get a photo, get an autograph, and see what the drivers look like, up close and personal, without their helmets on.
Montgomery County Dairy Ambassador Adelena Countermine and her court consisting of Aurora Graff, Mari Zemken, and Bella Smith were all on hand assisting in victory lane ceremonies for the feature winners. This event was one of the first events for the County Dairy Court since their recent Coronation Banquet. Their duty is to promote agriculture and dairy products, and they were at the speedway on Saturday night to honor the sport of racing in the county and the many agricultural minded drivers on the circuit.
Robbie Greco started the evening during opening ceremonies with his rendition of the National Anthem and the 50/50 had another huge night with a $2726 payout after the hard work of Rose, Julie, and Heather.
JaMike Sowle and Cody Clark took the initial green flag from the front row in the Amsterdam Truck Center Modified feature with Clark the early race leader. The one and only caution in the event was out before any laps were completed for a wreck in turn two involving Rocky Warner, Stewart Friesen, and defending Track Champion Alex Yankowski. All were able to continue except for Warner who was done for the evening.
On the original restart, Clark continued to lead and by lap seven he enjoyed a straightaway advantage over the second place car of Sowle. Friesen restarted at the rear of the field after a visit to the hot pit under caution, and by lap ten he was already up to the sixth position. One lap at a time, one position at a time, Friesen moved into the top five which at the halfway point of the 30-lap event consisted of Clark, Sowle, Brian Calabrese, Friesen, and seventh place starter Jack Lehner.
With ten laps to go both Calabrese and Freisen got by Sowle for the second and third positions with Freisen also getting by Calabrese for the second position one lap later. At that point Clark held almost a half-track advantage which Friesen was able to cut into as he was turning lap times that were almost a second faster than the leader. At the checkered flag, Clark was the winner over Friesen by 0.658 secs with Lehner, Calabrese, and Sowle completing the top five.
“One lap I pushed it too hard in three and four and about took down the fence so after that I slowed my pace down a little bit,” Clark told Mimi Lazzaro in victory lane. “I figured that I didn’t need to push that much, but I knew Stewy would be coming so I was just trying to get out as far as I could.”
“The balance on this car is real good,” Clark continued to say. “I could run the top and actually moved down to the middle in one and two. I tried running the top but felt like I was scrubbing off so much speed because I would drive it in hard but couldn’t carry it all the way through, so I moved down to the middle. I also tried the bottom, but the middle was definitely the best for me.”
Pole position starter Kadon Hohensheldt took the early lead in the Swagger Factory Apparel Sportsman feature with third place starter Dan Santabarbara in tow. The top two of Hohensheldt and Santabarbara pulled away from the rest of the field with lap traffic coming into play just after the halfway point with Jonny Feagles, Tyler Bobar, and 12th place starter Tyler Peet completing the top five at that point.
The yellow flag was out on lap 19 for Brock Miller who came to a stop on the backstretch with front end damage. On the restart, Hohensheldt and Santabarbara both got out of shape after contact between the two allowing Feagles to get by for the lead as the early top two drivers fell back further in the top five. While Feagles got by for the lead, Peet took the second position away and got by Feagles for the lead on the inside of turn three with three laps to go.
When Dylan Madsen brought out the caution on the final lap after slowing in turn three with front end damage, it resulted in a one lap shootout between Peet and Chad Edwards, who started the event in the 17th position and made his way through the field. The restart was single file as the event had less than five laps remaining and Peet was able to maintain his lead and go on to the win in the Ted’s Body Shop #12T, his second career win in the division at Fonda.
Edwards, Feagles, Santabarbara, and Hohensheldt completed the top five.
“I guess we’re gonna have to keep on getting rid of Chris Moore,” Peet jokingly said to Mimi Lazzaro in victory lane. “I see you and I start running good. That was awesome, the track was good. The top was good for awhile and I could make some moves up there but then it kind of went away.”
“I got lucky on that one start there and was able to get by some guys,” Peet went on to say. “The meet and greet was awesome today, it was great to see all the fans. I’ve gotta thank everyone and hopefully we can get a couple more of these.”
Caden Dumblewski led lap one of the 20-lap Leatherstocking Credit Union Pro Stock feature until Jason Morrison took the lead away on lap two on the outside of turn three and four. Third place starter Nick Stone and fifth place starter Ivan Joslin both got by Dumblewski for the second and third positions on lap two with an early caution out one lap later.
This set up a side by side dual throughout the remainder of the event with Stone utilizing the inside groove while Morrison was running the high groove. At the halfway point in the event the top five consisted of Morrison, Stone, Joslin, seventh place starter Kenny Gates, and eighth place starter Beau Ballard.
Stone got by Morrison at the line to complete lap 13 but the lead was a short one for Stone as Morrison got back by him for the top spot one lap later. One final yellow flag flew with three laps to go setting up a shootout to the checkered flag. Morrison and Stone remained side by side over the remaining laps but coming out of turn four to the checkered flag Stone had enough of a run on the bottom to get by Morrison and take the win in the Stone Motorsports/Todd Hoffman owned #8N.
Morrison settled for second with Gates, Ballard, and Joslin completing the top five. For Stone it was his first victory of the 2025 season and the 71st of his career in the division, which is second on the all-time win list.
“The bottom was my only chance,” Stone said in victory lane. I didn’t want to go up on top and just follow Jason. The restart tightened it up, driving a little bit harder gave me the edge at the end. The lap cars got me close; it was just a great race. We would have been happy finishing second, especially to Jason as he is one of my best friends. I thought that we could get enough of a run that we could drag race to the checkered and I have to thank Todd Hoffman who puts this car under us.”
Lance Hill led the 15-lap Montgomery County Office for Aging Inc. Limited Sportsman feature at the drop of the green flag, but it was fourth place starter Camron Hotaling who led when the lap counter clicked off lap one. Hotaling had his car set up perfectly for the outside groove and pulled away from the rest of the field with the top five at the halfway point consisting of Hotaling, Steve Wagoner, Corky Warner, Mason Gray, and Hill.
Hotaling led the remaining laps for his first event win at Fonda with the only other change in the top five occurring on lap ten when Warner got past Wagoner for the second position. Hotaling won the event in the Home Magic Exterior Designs #98 followed in the top five by Warner, Wagoner, Gray, and Hill.
“It’s been crazy for my fourth time in the car,” Hotaling said in victory lane. “But I like it. Hopefully we can get more here soon. We were here last year with a Vintage car just to make sure that we liked it. Then we got one of these and it’s been great.”
Kerrie Hollenback led the first six laps in the Fonda Fair Four Cylinder feature until Jay Ingersoll took command of the race on lap seven. Ingersoll led the remaining laps for the overall win (DOHC) while the overall third place finisher Wayne Russell Jr. was the winner in the SOHC class. The overall top five at the checkered flag consisted of Ingersoll, Hollenback, Russell Jr., Ben Ladd, and John Ray.
“It was interesting, but we pulled it off,” DOHC winner Jay Ingersoll said in victory lane. “Kerrie is always fast, and I knew that it was gonna be a challenge. I was watching the laps counting down, so I knew I had better do something quick.”
“I won at Utica Rome last Wednesday and Friday and today at Fonda,” Russell Jr. said in victory lane. “This car just knows how to win and this feels good.”
