WEATHER AND THRILLING COMPETITION HIGHLIGHT DAY ONE OF SPEEDFEST AT TOMAH SPARTA SPEEDWAY
Now that the summer season of vacations and road construction has come to a close with the start of the Autumnal Equinox happening soon, another important season has just begun. Year-end special season for race tracks is starting up as drivers from different tracks across the Midwest gather to battle for very important honors that will be with them for a long time. The new kid on the block as far as year-end specials go takes place right here at Tomah Sparta Speedway. After a successful debut last year, SpeedFest returns for its second running as a two-day show in 2025. Rain tried to delay practice at the start of day one, but then reared its ugly head again to cut short the day with the end in sight. In between those threats of rain we witnessed some heart stopping racing action that left the fans on the edge of their seats.
The first Great North Legends feature saw Andrew Borntreger power past Riley Goodwin to lead the opening lap. Grant Hooker spun in turn four to bring out the yellow. After battling with Goodwin for a few laps after the restart, last year's SpeedFest champion Robby Carter charged his way around Borntreger to the lead on lap five. Hooker looped his machine again on lap eight, but in turn two this time. As Carter pulled away from the pack, Cael Slater and Slinger champion Lincoln Cain put on a whale of a fight over second. Slater took over second on lap 10 and began to focus his energies on Carter. Contact with fast qualifier Carter Stein sent Borntreger spinning in turn two on lap 12 and brought a tire onto the track to force a yellow. Racing did not get very far with a stackup in turn two that collected Dalton Lee, Hooker and Alex Ruedinger. Devon Lee spun on the front straight on lap 16 to bring a quick return of the yellow flag. Carter had his hands full with Cain and Ayrton Brockhouse on the restart. Even though Brockhouse took over the runner-up spot on lap 20, Carter began to maintain a healthy margin over the two-time Tomah Sparta Legends champ. As we reached the ten laps to run mark, Brockhouse began to slowly inch closer to Carter. Brockhouse was on Carter's rear bumper with seven laps to go, but Brockhouse got loose in turn three and that allowed Carter to open up his lead again. Brockhouse was determined to move into first place, but the yellow flag returned with four laps remaining for a spinning Dalton Lee in turn two. Brockhouse dove into the pits under yellow with an issue, but spun as he returned to the track. Carter maintained enough of a lead over Cain to make it two straight SpeedFest feature victories.
Andrew Borntreger drove underneath Abby Blasel to put himself in the lead to start Great North Legend feature #2. Borntreger once again pulled out to a hefty margin, but then a major pileup in turn one led to a stoppage of racing action. In a big heaping pile of tires and race car bodies included the likes of Abby Blasel, Dalton Lee, James Berndsen, Kooper Heintz, and point leader Ayrton Brockhouse. As the cleanup continued from this massive pileup 'on the 405', the rain unfortunately returned to play more havoc with us. That forced officials to pull the plug on the feature and conclude it at the start of day two's racing action on Sunday.
The Born Construction INEX Bandoleros ran two features and the division was also broken up into the Bandit and Outlaw classes. After Kam Martinez bounced off the front straight wall at the start of the first Bandit class feature, try two did not go any better after Jase Riedner spun coming to green. The third time was finally the charm as Jaxxston Jump surged to the front. Unfortunately Jump spun in turn four just as the rain began to fall. Luckily it was brief and we got back to racing. Christopher Flynn was now in command and pulled out to a sizable lead over Jase Riedner, but the yellow returned on lap four. Riedner and Carter Clapp made hard contact in turn four that ended Riedner's race. Wesley Baumeister tried to keep pace with Flynn on the restart, but another yellow flew on lap four for a spin in turn two by Andrew Brelje. Baumeister was struggling with his own race car as Flynn began to open up for advantage on the field. Flynn had a rocket ship as he drove away to an impressive feature win.
The first Bandolero feature for the Outlaw class saw Carson Cauble in his first ever appearance in Cranberry Country lead the opening laps of the race. Blake Michael and Ace Oldenhoff made hard contact with each other in turn four to bring out the caution on lap five. Michael was able to rejoin the race with an 'air conditioned' back of his race car. Axel Oldenhoff surged past Cauble for the lead on the restart as our visitor from Sailsbury, NC fell deeper into the field. With five laps left to run, the 'Beast of the Bandos' Bentley Thompson took over second and began another chapter of his Tomah battles with Oldenhoff. Thompson got to within a car length but Oldenhoff won this latest installment of their 'Tomah Wars'.
Hunter Graham powered to the front at the start of the second Bandit class feature for the Bandoleros. First race winner Christopher Flynn closed up quickly on the leader, but the stalled car of Carter Clapp in turn three forced a yellow flag. Flynn wasted little time off the restart to charge past Graham and take charge of the race. Wesley Baumeister tried to close the gap on Graham for second, but Graham was able to hold onto the position. Flynn put on another impressive performance to sweep the Bandit class features.
Gage Kubicz charged around Carter Cauble for what he thought was the lead, but both would be snookered by Justice Doubrava for the lead at the start of the second Outlaw class Bandolero feature. Kubicz stuck right behind Doubrava in hopes of getting back into the number one position. Contact between Cauble and the 'modified bandolero' of Ace Oldenhoff sent the latter into the 'spin cycle' in turn three on lap four. Doubrava had a massive swarm of race cars to fight off as he maintained the lead on the restart. Once things got settled down, Axel Oldenhoff and Bentley Thompson were following Doubrava's tire tracks. Thompson moved into second at halfway, then began to stalk Doubrava for the top spot. With four laps left to run, Thompson shot around Doubrava to settle into the lead. Kubicz came to a stop at Victory Lane with two laps to go that would set up an intense fight to the finish. Ethan Jensen spun in turn four to set a complete restart of the feature with two laps left. Thompson pulled away from his competition on the final restart and captured another feature trophy to add to his massive collection at home.
Defending track champion Glen Bush, Jr. battled hard with Nick Newton at the start of the Hornet feature and came out with the lead at the line for the first three laps. Newton got a good run on Bush, Jr. coming out of turn two to move into the top spot on lap four. Soon Newton would have to contend with fellow Jefferson racer Landon Peterson, who worked the outside lane very well to lead the pack after six laps. Those two drivers built up a massive lead as Bush, Jr. put on an impressive battle over third with fellow former Hornet champion Paul Finch. It was not the 'Cornfield in the Country', but Peterson felt at ease at his 'home away from home' as he dominated the race to score his third feature win at Tomah Sparta this season.
2023 champion Mike Gratz shot past Christopher Neal to lead the early laps of the Sixers feature. Coming from nearly the back of the field, fast qualifier Matt Moore picked off runners one at a time before powering by Gratz to move into the lead on lap eight. Soon Matt would have to deal with point leader Alivia Moore for the number one spot. That would be interrupted on lap 12 when Andrew Moore and Jay Raines, Jr. tangled in turn four. Alivia would not let up on Matt on the restart and as the race reached the mid-race mark. Sportsmen champion Charles Vian, Jr. hoped into a Sixer for the first time in a while and moved up to third with ten laps left to run. Matt and Alivia were not worried about their competition ruining their battle for first as they put on one exciting battle as the laps counted down. Alivia knew she was going to add some more ground to her point lead and stuck behind Matt as he claimed another checkered flag win.
If you enjoyed the thrilling racing action from the first day of SpeedFest 2, come back to Tomah Sparta Speedway on September 21 to witness a lot more on the line for our competitors during SpeedFest 2’s second day of competition. The Legends and Bandoleros will run their final races of the season with track championships and the Wisconsin Asphalt Racing Series (WARS) championships hanging in the balance. There is even more at stake for the Legends because their feature will send a driver to the INEX Asphalt Legends Nationals in Las Vegas in late October. The High School Racing Association will finally get to run their long delayed final two features with a Tomah Sparta track championship, a Wisconsin State HSRA championship and the overall HSRA series championship waiting at the end of the rainbow for them. Our weekly Hornet and Sixer divisions will also be back in action as their title races become a bit more clearer. Gates open at 11:30, group qualifying for the Legends and HSRA roars to life at high Noon and the close quarters racing competition starts at 1.
