Austin Schaeffer
Part One of a 2-Part Bad Luck Evening
Mid-way thru the season and we had begun to “click” with the 600 until Austin decided he was going to become more of a “Showman” than a racer. In Austin’s defense it wasn’t anything he did no; this was the result of an engine that decided it had had enough and “checked out” causing a major engine explosion and fire. With 6 laps to go in route to completing our first feature event in the 600 Austin had advanced very well in the feature event picking off about 7 cars in route to a top 5 finish. Suddenly as Austin entered turn 1 the car began to smoke heavily and as he exited turn two onto the back straight-away the engine clearly had expired. Just as Austin reached the end of the back straight-away and entering turn 3 the engine erupts in a ball of flame due to hot oil coming in contact with the header. Austin brought the car to an immediate stop and before safety workers could “blink” he was out of the car walking away unscathed. Once again showing his professionalism he waved to the crowd signaling he’s ok and did his signature “Kyle Bush” curtain call bow. A true showman indeed!
