Inside Line Promotions – ELMA, Wash. (June 17, 2025) – Trey Starks recorded back-to-back second-place finishes last weekend to give him 10 podium performances this season.
Starks was efficient on Saturday at Skagit Speedway in Alger, Wash., where he set quick time during qualifying before advancing from fourth to second place during a heat race. He capped the night by maneuvering from third to second place in the main event.
“We went out late in qualifying and had really good speed,” he said. “In the heat race, the top two made contact and I spun to avoid. A car behind got on top of us and so we had nose wing damage. We had to go to the back and at that point we restarted third or fourth. We got to second so it was no harm no foul as we were still in the feature redraw.
“We got into second on the first or second lap of the feature and then played chase to (Jason) Solwold the entire time. We were way too close to the same speed for me to make any moves. We had one chance on a restart about halfway through and another time where we got close, but we gambled on some things with the setup and the track went the other way so we were off a little bit. Nothing crazy, but we were off enough that if you put a guy like Solwold in front of you he’ll be tough to beat.”
Starks now leads the 360ci winged sprint car championship standings at Skagit Speedway by 66 points.
He ventured to Grays Harbor Raceway on Sunday for the Timber Cup with the NARC 410 Sprint Car Series. Starks again set quick time during qualifying. A run from fourth to third place in a heat race moved him into the dash. Starks gained a position in the dash to finish fifth, lining him up on the inside of the third row in the main event.
It didn’t take long for Starks to start working his way forward. He used a restart to advance from fourth to third place and then up to second place. Starks stalked the leader and closed on him before a caution brought out a fuel stop.
Once the race resumed, Starks pounced and took the lead on Lap 12. He began to pull away until he closed on a car that was about to go a lap down in the final laps.
“I have a good sense on how Grays Harbor develops in the feature,” he said. “The fast part of the track can change throughout the race. I was able to know when to use the bottom and when to get away from it. The grip will be really good and then gone within a couple of laps. Then it might move again. We used up the bottom as much as we could to move to third or fourth. I started moving around on the track. Once we got to second I just had to stay out of the leader’s air and find a spot on the track that was developing grip before he was aware of it. We had a red flag and right before that I got to where he could hear me and he started searching. With the red happening it gave me time to reset and think of a plan. When we restarted I tried to run it hard to put him behind me and then I could settle in to run my car nice and easy. It worked out well until the last lap.”
Starks was halted during multiple bids to get around a driver he was attempting to lap, which allowed James McFadden to close and use a slide job in turns three and four on the final lap to win by less than a quarter of a second.
“We got into an unfortunate situation in traffic,” Starks said. “I just made too many mistakes and a guy like James is going to capitalize.”
Attention now shifts back to Skagit Speedway for the Jim Raper Memorial Super Dirt Cup this Thursday through Saturday. More than $100,000 is up for grabs for the feature winner of the marquee event on Saturday night.
“We seem to have pretty good car speed,” he said. “It makes the week that much less stressful so I can focus on minimizing mistakes and trying to put myself in the right spot. I’d say we feel as good as we ever have going into Dirt Cup.”
