CHILLICOTHE, Ohio – In his fourth race of the season, Cale Thomas was looking to kick-start the campaign after a tumultuous three-race weekend with the All Star Circuit of Champions. In an Ohio Valley Sprint Car Association event at Atomic Speedway, he did that, and then some. Following the fastest qualifying lap of the night, Thomas brought his machine home in second place to corral the best result of his blossoming sprint car career.
Recording a 12.498-second lap put Thomas atop the qualifying results, averaging 108.02 mph around the three-eighth-mile oval. The heat race inversion slated the Fairland, Ind. resident fourth on the grid. In a gripping eight-lap event, he quickly dispatched two of the three competitors in front of him and then set out for the leader. Reaching his rear bumper taking the white flag, Thomas navigated through turns one and two before a fashionable move off the high side in turn three allowed him to shoot under the final foe to narrowly capture the win.
Firing off in the main event from the pole, Thomas dropped into second for the early going as eventual race winner Cole Duncan powered into the lead on the start. Atomic points leader Kory Crabtree soon wanted to do battle with Thomas, and took second on lap eight. Undeterred, the driver of the Engler Machine and Tool No. 91 wouldn’t fall far behind, and nabbed the spot back on the 15th lap. Duncan, however, had pulled away by a straightaway and was quickly picking off cars in lapped traffic. Thomas settled in and collected the runner-up finish. “We missed the set-up a bit, or else we may have had something for [Duncan],” Thomas said. “Still a great night.”
Thomas would like to thank Engler Machine and Tool, Factory Kahne, J&J Auto Racing, Kaeding Performance, Donovan Engineering, Spike Products, Simpson Indy, Maxima Oils, Hoosier Racing Tire, Blackbeard, and Shadow Graphics, as well as all of his fans for their continued support.
Thomas is currently seeking additional sponsorship going forward. For more information, please contact Thomas or Redbeard Promotions with any inquiries.
Thomas is next scheduled to compete on June 3 at Kokomo Speedway in Kokomo, Ind. with the World of Outlaws in the No. 91 410ci winged sprint entry.
