Timms, Neal shine at I-80 Speedway
By Anthony Ainslie (Greenwood, NE) -- The final weekend of racing for the Malvern Bank 360 Sprint Cars kicked off Friday at I-80 Speedway.
Greenwood, Nebraska was the sight for the weekend of sprint car racing in the state of Nebraska. A field of 22 cars made the trip to I-80 for the final two steps to the championship. In addition, the Good Ol’ Time Racing Association was on hand for their third visit to I-80 on their tour.
Early on in the 20-lap sprint car main event, Chris Martin jumped to the lead ahead of point leader Jack Dover. As the race progressed, 15-year-old Ryan Timms worked his way up to the front and pulled a slide job on Martin for the lead with 11 laps left.
The only caution of the race came out for Monty Ferriera blowing a tire with only three laps to go. On the restart, Dover and Martin battled for second while Ryan Timms ran away and took the win in his I-80 Speedway debut. Jack Dover took second while Chris Martin finished third. Clint Garner and Terry McCarl rounded out the top five.
In the Good Ol’ Time Racing Association feature, trophy dash winnerGary Proskocil took the early lead. He led the for the opening lap before Johnny Orlowski took a turn at the lead, then Bob Werkmeister made his way to the front.
From there, Werkmeister ran out the laps and held off Darrell Doerr to take home the win. Doerr had to settle for second while John Orlowski Jr. came from last to finish third. Johnny Orlowski and John Adamy rounded out the top five.

NEAL SURVIVES WILD RACE FOR CHAMPIONSHIP WEEKEND OPENER
By Anthony Ainslie (Greenwood, NE) -- The final weekend of the season kicked off Friday night as the Malvern Bank and Haulin’ with Hoker Trucking Super Late Model Series came together for two nights at I-80 Speedway.
Both tours came together for the fourth time this year for the final two nights of racing for the 2021 season. Greenwood, Nebraska’s I-80 Speedway hosted the series for the first time since the West Series opening weekend in the first weekend of April. A field of 33 cars made the trip to I-80 for the second to last race until the champions are crowned.
Top qualifier Chad Holladay started on the pole for the 30-lap main event. The Muscatine, Iowa driver jumped to the lead while Jason Hahne and Jake Neal battled for the second position.
A pair of cautions came out on laps 11 and 18 for a couple of cars that came to a stop on the track. The race continued on with Holladay in the lead and Neal running second. With just seven laps to go, Holladay broke down with a power steering failure while leading. That gave the lead over to Neal.
Following this incident, multiple drivers began dropping out of the race. Two of the notable dropouts were Bill Leighton Jr. who worked his way to seventh from the 18th starting position before going off the track. The other was Charlie McKenna who lost power while under caution with only two laps remaining. McKenna was running fourth at the time.
A two-lap shootout saw Jake Neal hold off defending series champion Tad Pospisil to capture his second career series win and the $5,000 payday. Pospisil would have to settle for second while Jason Hahne took third, his career best finish at I-80 Speedway. Ben Schaller took fourth, and JC Wyman came from 19th to round out the top five.
Both tours return to action on October 2nd at I-80 Speedway for the final race of the 2021 season. An entire summer’s worth of action comes down to one final $5,000 to win feature in Greenwood.
