Scarborough Defeats Sunn for Matty B Memorial Win;59th Season kicks off in style on Black Diamond Builders night

WEST HAVEN, Vt.-- Brandon, VT.’s Joey Scarborough made a statement Sunday night by passing Josh Sunn for the lead in the final laps of the 32-lap “Matty B Memorial” race at Devil’s Bowl Speedway, earning a $3,200 victory. Scarborough was joined in victory lane by Billy Duprey (limited), Matt Cram (novice), Ray Hanson (mini-sprint), JP Corrow (mini-stock) and Eric Friend (Crown Vic).
Anthony Warren and Dave Camara led the 32-car Sunoco Sportsman Modified field to green with Camara taking the early lead. He showed the way through the halfway point, surviving a few early restarts before the race really got going. Camara’s lead evaporated on lap 14 when the caution flew again and the field was bunched back up. Fourth stater Josh Sunn was Camara’s new front row dancing partner. Sunn worked Camara on the restart and got by on lap 17 and began to pull away from the field. At this point, Scarborough, who started 13th, just cracked the top-five.
Thirteen laps of green flag racing followed, bringing the field to lap 27 when another yellow flew, giving Scarborough a chance at Sunn for the win. Sunn ran the high side and Scarborough worked down low. Sunn bobbled in the south end with three laps to go and Scarborough cleared him in the next corner, gaining a two car-length lead. On the white flag lap, Sunn reeled in Scarborough in turn one and put a slider on him in the final corner, but Scarborough crossed back to the inside and drove off to the checkered flag. Sunn was 2nd with Dave Camara 3rd, Brent Warren 4th and Donovan Lussier 5th. Tim LaDuc finished 7th from 26th starting position, earning the Elmo’s Pit Stop Hard Charger Award.
The O’Reilly Auto Parts Limited Sportsman feature was won by Hydeville, VT.’s Bill Duprey. Duprey started 3rd on the grid and passed New Haven’s Alex Layn for the lead on lap 11, holding car No. 751 at bay for the remaining 14 circuits to score the opening night win. Jason Quenneville was 3rd with Logan Denis finishing 4th after starting 24th. Katrina Leclaire returned to racing with a 5th place finish.
In the Hoosier Racing Tire Novice Sportsman, Matt Cram picked up the feature win. The Leicester driver had an eventful night, being caught up in an accident in his heat race and coming back to win it. He then used the heads-up starting format to cruise out ahead of the rest of the 14-car field and earn the win. Bomoseen’s Trevor Hurlburt was 2nd with Winston Forbes earning a career-best 3rd place finish. Aiden Benoure and James McLellan completed the top five. True rookies Rob Steele, the former crown vic ace, and Chris Sumner impressed with 7th and 6th place runs, respectively.
The Friend Construction 500cc Mini Sprints put on one heck of a race again. Seventeen cars showed up for competition and St. Albans driver Scott Bachand was the best of them all early on. Bachand led the way, sporting a fast car and more than adequate driving. Known mini-sprint phenom Ray Hanson ran 2nd for much of the race, trying to find a way by Bachand, looking to the outside lane, but had a hard time coming up with the momentum to make the pass. Hanson got by Bachand late in the going, and then Bachand suffered a mechanical failure that ended his great run. Hanson went on to win in memory of Brian Severance, Hanson’s car owner who passed away this past winter. Gage Provencher was 2nd with Chris Lennox 3rd. Quinn Quenneville and Jordan Zakrzewski completed the top-five.
In the Fisher Auto Parts Mini Stocks, Peru, NY.’s JP Corrow stunned the 29-car field with his first win at Devil’s Bowl, just two weeks after winning his first ever mini-stock feature up at the Airborne Park Speedway. Tyler Bell and Jeremy Brownell led the field to green with Bell leading early. Corrow got by for lap five and led the rest of the way to bring home the win. Jeremy Brownell was 2nd with Griff Mahoney 3rd, Ronnie Alger 4th and Chris Charbonneau 5th.
Bristol’s Eric Friend won the nightcap 9th State Cannabis Crown Vic Feature. Friend started on the pole and demonstrated the speed fans have come to expect from the former spectator racer-turned serious competitor. Roger LaDuc was 2nd in his crown vic debut. Brad Cram was 3rd with TJ Knight and Chad Merrill rounding out the top-five.
Devil’s Bowl Speedway is off for spring break next Saturday, May 17. The track will be back in action Saturday, May 24 and Sunday, May 25 for the 5th annual Northeast Crate Nationals and the first 358 Modified special of the year! The Sunoco Sportsman will qualify and race Sunday with a 100-lap, $5,000-to-win feature! Since the event was moved to Devil’s Bowl in 2021, winners have included Vince Quenneville, Tim LaDuc, Cody McPherson and Fire Swamp. More information about the Memorial Day Weekend racing will be out in the coming days!
