Piper Outlasts Full Field in Sunday Win at the Bowl

WEST HAVEN, Vt.-- Leicester, V.T.’s Adam Piper defeated 31 of the baddest Sunoco Sportsman Modified drivers around Sunday to score his third career victory in Devil’s Bowl’s headline division.
Piper shared the front row with Pittsford racing veteran Brian Whittemore for the main event. Piper used the super-quick outside lane to power past Whittemore on lap one and never gave up the lead. Fair Haven’s Billy Lussier got on the move early, climbing from 6th position on the grid to chase Piper while mid-pack starters Justin Comes, Tim LaDuc and Joey Scarborough all made hay early, jumping into the top-10 almost immediately. Caution flags for Derrick McGrew, Jr. and Mike Palmer slowed the event on different occasions, but Piper succeeded on every restart to score the win. Lussier was 2nd with Comes 3rd, LaDuc 4th and Scarborough 5th. Both LaDuc and Scarborough came up 13 positions. LaDuc earned the Elmo’s Pit Stop Hard Charger Award by virtue of finishing one position higher than Scarborough. Josh Sunn, the points leader coming into the night, finished 19th.
In the O’Reilly Auto Parts Limited Sportsman Feature, nobody could run with Ed Bell. The Queensbury, N.Y. driver was slated to start 4th on the grid, but problems for Adam Lafountain handed Bell the outside front row with Derrick Counter on the pole. Bell, like Piper, used the high groove to drive away from Counter on the start and led through the middle of the race with no issues. A string of late yellows forced Bell to out-duel Poultney’s Marty Hutchins again and again on restarts, eventually landing Bell in victory lane. Unfortunately, Bell did not meet the minimum weight requirement after the feature and was disqualified as a result. Hutchins was named the winner over Bob Kilburn, Alex Layn, Steve Miller and Fred Little.
In the Hoosier Racing Tire Novice ranks, Aiden Benoure picked up the win. Benoure and Russ Farr led the field to green for the 20-lap feature and Farr jumped out in front early as the track conditions seemed to favor the outside lane for most of the night. Farr led the opening three laps before surrendering the top spot to Benoure, at which time Farr developed a power steering issue and began to lose the pace. Benoure drove off into the night with the checkered flag. Young lady racer Raelin Dunham was 2nd and opening night winner Matt Cram was 3rd. Trevor Hurlburt and Robert Steves completed the top-five. Farr came home 6th.
In the Fisher Auto Parts Mini Stock ranks, Jake Mallory and Jerry Jordan led the field to green. A scary incident in turn three paused the race early and took out a few contenders. Mallory led the field back to the restart and Damian Olden seized the lead while 11th starter Chris Charbonneau in his rear-wheel drive Mustang began a march towards the front. He registered as 6th on lap two, and by lap six he was 3rd. On lap nine, Charbonneau passed Olden for the top spot and never gave it up, even as Tyler Bell paced him around. They finished 1st and 2nd, with Kaleb Sheppard, Olden and Griff Mahoney rounding out the top-five.
The Friend Construction 500cc Mini Sprints ran two 20-lap features with no heats. Ray Hanson won them both, reminding everyone he is still the boss of weekly wing racing in West Haven. Hanson started 11th in feature one and 13th in feature two. Almost equally impressive, Quinn Quenneville finished 2nd to Hanson in both features, rebounding from a frightening crash on Memorial Day that resulted in damage to the turn four catch fence. Destin St. Clair was 3rd in the first feature and Chris Pierce took the final podium spot in feature two. Nineteen cars entered the pits.
Dan Desforges won the night-capping enduro. The 50-lap affair had 33 cars registered, and Desforges worked traffic well in his Hulbert’s Supply #30 car to take the victory.
Devil’s Bowl Speedway is back in action on Fathers’ Day, Sunday, June 15 at 7PM with the “Slate Valley 67,” a 67-lap, $7,067-to-win Short Track Super Series Modified Feature. All the best dirt big and small-block modified teams in the northeast will be in West Haven next Sunday! The sportsman will run topless along with the limiteds. The mini-stocks will complete the four division card. General admission is $25, kids 12 and under get in free!
