Lussier Invades Devil’s Bowl for $5,000 Victory in Crate Nationals
WEST HAVEN, Vt.-- Undoubtedly one of the biggest stars of the last two racing seasons anywhere in the region is Donovan Lussier. The young driver from St. Denis, Quebec has become the latest sportsman class juggernaut. If you want to win a sportsman race, you’ll have to go through him. Monday was no exception. Lussier led over 40 laps en route to the Northeast Crate Nationals win.
A huge crowd and a literally full pit area of drivers were treated with beautiful weather and a slick racing surface in West Haven. At the completion of time trials, heat races and the redraw, local Brent Warren and Fonda-based invader Chad Edwards led a 30-car field to the green flag in the 100-lap Northeast Crate Nationals feature. Edwards led lap one with Warren settling in behind him in 2nd. Lussier was content to ride 3rd until he found an opportunity to pass Warren on lap ten and did so with Josh Masterson following him through, setting up an epic, three-car battle for the top spot between Edwards, Lussier and Masterson. The trio followed each other around for several laps, ducking and diving for position. Edwards eventually took the lead back on lap 35 and began to work through lapped traffic, holding the lead until lap 72, when Lussier overtook him once more. Lussier began to stretch out his lead, and a few laps later a caution flag bunched up the field and cleared the traffic for the leaders. In the final 25 laps of the race, multiple yellows kept lapped traffic from being a problem and Lussier went on to win. Edwards was 2nd with Brian Calabrese charging to 3rd from his 15th starting position. Josh Sunn was 4th, and Payton Talbot was 5th. Thirty-nine cars attempted to qualify for the race.
The O’Reilly Auto Parts Limited Sportsman 30-lap feature was one that will not soon be forgotten by fans at “The Bowl.” William Lussier, Jr. and Kamden Duffy led a number of laps with Santa Bob Kilburn challenging them both, but it was Gary English Jr.’s treatment of the outside cushion that made the show. English started 4th and did not have much success early, only maintaining his position by running the outside and middle lanes with varying levels of consistency and speed. After lap 20, English began to bounce the car off the cushion on the extreme outside lane on both ends of the track, taking the lead from Duffy late in the going to secure the win in more than dramatic fashion. Duffy was 2nd followed by Lussier, Alex Layn and Jason Quenneville. Kilburn ended up 6th.
The Hoosier Racing Tire Novice Sportsman feature served as the nightcap with Castleton’s Rob Steves picking up the win for the first time in his career, leading all but the first 4 laps from his 4th starting position. Polesitter and early leader Raelin Dunham was 2nd with true rookie Rob Steele 3rd, opening night winner Matt Cram 4th and Jaden Pierce 5th.
Fourteen street stocks/renegades were on hand for the special home-track rules event Monday. The $500-to-win feature was won by Josh Bussino, who dominated the race from the pole, leading every lap. “The Bulldog” was followed across the line by Airborne Park Speedway’s favorite trucker Tyler Irwin in his F-150 pickup bodied No. 54 ride. Chris Murray, a multi-time super stock champion, was 3rd. Tyler Tremblay and Shawn Fountain completed the top five. The next renegade race on the schedule is Sunday, August 31.
In the Fisher Auto Parts Mini Stock ranks, 37 cars pulled through the gate, giving fans two 20 lap, $250-to-win features. First, Jake Fountain of Dannemora, N.Y. drove the Haiden Bordeau owned No. 08 to victory lane over fellow North Country invader Cody Young. Ronnie Alger, Glenn Engstrom and Cody Dion rounded out the top-five. The second feature was won by track regular Jeremy Brownell of Greenwich; N.Y. Ryan Patch was 2nd with Griff Mahoney, Adam Stewart and James Murray completing the top-five.
Schuylerville’s Jenna Zakrzewski collected her first career Friend Construction 500cc Mini Sprint feature win at Devil’s Bowl Speedway on Monday. Zakrzewski started 4th and rode in 3rd for much of the race before taking advantage of a late restart to promote herself to the lead over Bridport’s Gage Provencher. Ray Hanson was 3rd with Pennsylvania long-hauler Alyssa Vanderpool 4th and Destin St. Clair in 5th.
Finally, the 9th State Cannabis Renegade Crown Vic Feature was won by Eric Friend. Despite starting 7th, Friend quickly made his way into the top-three, taking the lead from Brad Cram on lap nine. Castleton’s Roger LaDuc took 2nd position in the final laps, but was unable to reel in the leader. Friend crossed the line first, giving him his third win of the year between Devil’s Bowl and Airborne Park. LaDuc and Cram completed the podium. The crown vics are back this coming Saturday, May 31.
Also on the schedule for Saturday, May 31 is the kids’ bike giveaway and a special, double-feature for the mini sprints. All regular divisions will be on hand. General Admission is $15 with kids 12 and under getting in for free! Infield tailgating is available for $20. Pit passes are $30 for members and $40 for non-members. The pits open at 3PM with the stands opening at 4:30. Racing begins at 6PM!
