Thompson storms to Park Jefferson triumph

On Sunday evening, Cody Thompson wrapped up four nights of racing in six days with an impressive charge to his fourth feature victory of the year at his home track of Park Jefferson Speedway.

With a $1,000 top prize up for grabs, 17 IMCA Modified teams descended on the quarter-mile oval in North Sioux City, South Dakota.

Thompson spun his No. 25c Modified in his heat race and finished ninth, positioning him 17th on the grid to begin the 20-lap main event. He quickly rocketed forward and took the lead at the halfway point, then was in command of each of the remaining circuits. He took the checkered flag 1.262 seconds ahead of runner-up Ricky Stephan, with third place going to Chris Abelson. Shane DeMey and Chaz Baca finished fourth and fifth, respectively.

Thompson’s Park Jefferson win completed a slate of races that started on Tuesday with the Clash at the Creek XVII at Maribel, Wisconsin’s 141 Speedway. The two-day program brought 63 IMCA Modifieds to the 1/3-mile track each night.

On Tuesday, Thompson took third in his heat. He went on to start seventh and finish sixth in one of two 25-lap features that helped set the field for the finale. The next night, Thompson suffered a DNF and registered a ninth-place result in his heat race. He did not start the 50-lap, $10,000-to-win main event.

Next up, Thompson competed in the Mods for Mindy program at Crawford County Speedway in Denison, Iowa, on Friday. He was among 20 IMCA Modified competitors at the 3/8-mile speed plant for the $1,500-to-win program. After winning his heat, Thompson started the 25-lap A-Main from the pole. However, he ran into trouble and had to retire early. He was scored as finishing 18th.
