Kay is King of the Bullring at Benton County Speedway
By Anthony Ainslie (Vinton, IA) -- It was big Saturday night showdown for the Haulin’ with Hoker Trucking Super Late Models East Series as the tour made their first visit to Benton County Speedway.
The high-banked quarter-mile in Vinton, Iowa was the sight for round 14 of the 2022 season for the East Series. A stout field of 38 cars packed the pit areas for a chance at a big $5,000 payday.

Defending Governor’s Cup Winner Jason Hahne was Saturday’s #1 qualifier. The Webster City, Iowa native laid down a blistering fast 14.502 second lap. The four heat races were won by Ron Klein, Charlie McKenna, Dave Eckrich, and Jake neal. After two B-features and the provisionals were determined, a 24-car field took to the track for massive 40-lap main event.
The race was slow to start as a couple of incidents caused trouble for many drivers. Ron Klein, one of the heat race winners, ended up on his lid on the opening lap. Luke Pestka and JC Wyman were also collected. Wyman was able to continue on while Klein and Pestka were done for the night. Another pileup in turn four knocked Jeff Tharp and Corey Zeitner out of the race.
When the race got going, Andy Eckrich had the early lead before Point Leader Justin Kay took over. The Wheatland, Iowa native enjoyed the clean air up front for the majority of the race. In the second half of the race, Chad Holladay took the fight to Kay for the race lead. However, Kay was up to the challenge and fended off Holladay.
After 40 laps around the high banks of Benton County, Kay took home the $5,000 check and his third win of the season. It was Kay’s first win since winning back at Cresco Speedway back on June 23rd. Nick Marolf’s late race charge earned him second place while Chad Holladay took third. Andy Eckrich took fourth, and Jake Neal, after flattening a tire on lap two, came back through the field to round out the top five.
The Malvern Bank West Series is next up to action. The tour heads south for a doubleheader weekend. On Friday the 9th, the tour makes is annual visit to Lakeside Speedway in Kansasa City, Kansas. Then, the very next night, the series makes its debut at the I-70 Motorsports Park in Odessa, Missouri.
