Pospisil wins Final Race at I-80. Sobbing and Kay crowned Late Model Champions

By Anthony Ainslie (Greenwood, NE) -- The 2022 season for the Malvern Bank and Haulin’ with Hoker Trucking Super Late Models Series came to an end Saturday with the final race at the tour’s home track, I-80 Speedway.
The final round of racing for both tours came at the track that started it all. On April 5th, 2008, the Malvern Bank Super Late Models Series had its first ever race at Greenwood, Nebraska’s I-80 Speedway.

On Saturday, both East and West Series came for the final night in the 29-year history of the track. A strong field of 33 cars made the trip to Greenwood to send the race track out in style.

Kyle Berck started off the night by setting the fastest lap in qualifying with a 17.249 second time. In the heats, both series point leaders, Jesse Sobbing and Justin Kay, won heats one and three while Jake Neal and Charlie McKenna won heats two and four. After two B features in which Justin Zeitner and Ben Schaller won, a 26-car field was assembled for a 53-lap main event to decide the championships.

Jake Neal jumped to the lead to kick off the main event. Bill Leighton Jr. proceeded to battle Tad Pospisil for second, and Kyle Berck and Jesse Sobbing went back and forth for the fourth position.

Misfortunes struck Andy Eckrich as he had serious damage 14 laps into the race. He brought out the race’s first yellow flag of the race, and the Oxford, Iowa driver pulled off the track resulting in a 26th place finish.

With 28 laps remaining, Pospisil made the go-ahead move for the lead as he passed Neal coming off turn two. The pass was made just one lap before the caution came out again.

An incident with 23 laps to go took out two heavy-hitters. Jake Neal got sideways in turn one. He came down the track on got tagged hard by Kyle Berck. Berck spun around and brought out the caution. Both drivers would however keep their positions because the caution was considered inadvertent. Neal would try to continue running second and third, but they would both pull in two laps after the restart. Berck and Neal finished 21st and 22nd in the final order.

From there, the race went green to the end. Pospisil continued to lead while Justin Zeitner scythed his way through the pack and made it to second after starting back in 17th. When the final feature went into the record books, it was Tad Pospisil taking the $5,300 top prize. It was also Pospisil’s fourth win of the year, his second of the year at I-80, and his series win since early June. Justin Zeitner took second while Bill Leighton Jr. took third. Jesse Sobbing was fourth, and JC Wyman rounded out the top five.

With his fourth-place finish, Sobbing did enough to win the 2022 Malvern Bank West Series title by just 8 points over Bill Leighton Jr. It was Sobbing’s first career championship with the series. Sobbing also became the first Iowa driver to win the title in series history, and he also became the first driver to win the title without winning a points-paying race. His loan win was at Knoxville Raceway and was not for points.

Meanwhile, with a sixth-place finish was more than enough to secure a second consecutive Haulin’ with Hoker Trucking East Series Championship for Wheatland, Iowa’s Justin Kay. He finished the year with four wins doubling his win total from last season. His run at I-80 was one of his best runs at the 4/10 mile oval.
