Berck scores Malvern Bank Late Model win at Lakeside Speedway

By Anthony Ainslie (Kansas City, KS) -- Kyle Berck was victorious again in the Malvern Bank Super Late Models West Series’ return to Lakeside Speedway on Friday night.

A field of 24 cars from Nebraska, Iowa and Missouri made the trip down to Kansas City, Kansas for round 14 of the 2022 season. It was the series’ eighth ever visit to the high-banked 4/10 mile oval.

Qualifying saw Jesse Sobbing set quick time on the night. The Malvern, Iowa driver stopped the clock at 17.695 seconds. He and Kyle Berck were the only drivers to make it below 18 seconds as Berck was second fastest with a 17.871 lap time. Jake Neal, Charlie McKenna and Tad Pospsisil were the three heat race winners on Friday. Paul Glendenning finished up the qualifying process by winning the B Feature. McKenna sat on the pole for the 22-lap main event with Pospisil on the outside of the front row.

Things got wild on the start when Pospisil got sideways as the field came to take the green flag. The spin caused a multi-car pileup on the front stretch. Many of the cars were able to keep going, but Pospisil and Ben Schaller were both done for the night.

When the race got going, Charlie McKenna pulled out in front for the lead while Jesse Sobbing and Kyle Berck battled for second. Chad Holladay made it an even tighter race when joined the battle for second. Berck eventually got around Sobbing and went on to challenge McKenna for the race lead.

With 12 laps to go, Berck made his move for the lead after McKenna was caught behind a lapped car. Berck managed to make the lead change official right before the caution came out again. When racing resumed, Berck ran away with the show. That left McKenna to duel Sobbing for the second spot.

When the dust finally settled, Berck took home his record 90th Malvern Bank Series win of his career. It was also his fourth win on the 2022 season and his second win at Lakeside Speedway. The win was Berck’s first since the Silver Dollar Nationals weekend back on July 20th.

Jesse Sobbing won the battle for second on the last lap while Charlie McKenna took third. Jake Neal came in fourth, and Chad Holladay faded back to fifth.
Next on the schedule for the Malvern Bank West Series is the tour’s third brand new race track of the year. The Series will make its debut on the I-70 Motorsports Park in Odessa, Missouri on Saturday the 10th. Then, the West Series meets back up with the East as a select number of drivers will compete in the Bob Maaschman Memorial at the Knoxville Raceway in Knoxville, Iowa.
