Max Pozsgai
May Days
The early part of the season is usually a time to work some bugs out, and that's exactly what has happened for Max Pozsgai in the Mike Wallace Racing #10c. The rookie in the Illini Midget Racing Series started off the season at the Farmer City Raceway and won his very first heat race in a midget after passing his MWR teammate Patrick Bruns on the last corner. Due to his rookie status, Max had to start last for the first 3 events of the season. Working from last on the grid, Max was able to work up to 5th before spinning the #10c. He again raced from the back only to spin a second time while passing for 3rd. "I feel we had the fastest car all night, but a couple of rookie mistakes cost a shot a great finish. Overall I learned a lot and I was happy to be quick the first night out," Max said.
The following week, Max had his first opportunity to visit the Sycamore Speedway in Sycamore, IL. Again, starting in the back of the pack for the main event proved to be tough sledding for the MWR rookie. Max was able to work his way to 8th before a lap 10 restart, but was caught up in a pileup that collected 8 cars. With a bent axle, Max was able to soldier on for a 7th place finish. "We were just biding our time and looking to gain some spots on a restart, and someone decided to get impatient and caused a pileup that blocked the track. The car would hardly steer the last half of the race so I was glad to be able to finish, though it wasn't quite what we were looking for."
The third race for Max in the 10c came at the Rockford Speedway which was also Max's first pavement race since quarter midgets. Max proved to be a quick study which saw him time 4th, place 5th in his heat, and drove from last on the grid to 4th for his best finish in the Illini Series to date. "We had some great in car video coming from last to 4th in the feature. We were quick all night and when we finally freed the car up enought to pass cars in the feature we were really moving! Thank you to MWR for getting me up to speed so quick on the pavement!" Max stated.
Memorial Day weekend saw Max try his skills in two different cars. Friday night saw Max behind the wheel of the Jim Mahan owned #7x mini sprint at Lincoln Speedway in Lincoln, IL. Max faired well for his first time in the 1200cc mini sprint driving from 13th to 4th on a dry slick track.
Saturday night saw Max back behind the wheel of the MWR 10c at the Yankee Stadium of midget car racing, Angell Park Speedway in Sun Prairie Wisconsin. Max drove from 6th to 4th in the heat race, starting him outside of the front row for the feature due to the invert. This was also Max's first opportunity to start the feature event in the position he had earned. Max took the lead and pulled to a straightaway lead over his teammate, Bruns in the MWR #10B, the first two laps before a broken crank trigger would force Max to take the car pitside and a resulting DNF. "We had a good night Friday night in the Mahan 7x and it looked like we had a great car in the feature at the Prairie so that DNF was tough to swallow. Unfortunately, that is racing and sometimes you have to lose one before you can win one. I know we will put the 10C in victory lane soon enough," said Max.
The following night at Sun Prairie was cancelled due to rain.
