Mullens scores prelim win during Modified World Championship weekend at MTS

Tanner Mullens traveled to Fountain City, Wisconsin’s Mississippi Thunder Speedway over the weekend to compete for a $100,025 top prize in the inaugural Modified World Championship. While he didn’t take home the big paycheck, he did pick up his ninth feature victory of the year in preliminary action.

The four-day event brought 93 cars to the 1/3-mile oval, and after qualifying on Wednesday, Mullens started eighth in his Thursday heat race aboard his Sandlian Iron & Metal Auto Salvage No. 02 Modified. He finished sixth in his heat, then turned in a fourth-to-first run in his B-Main to start 22nd in the night's second 30-lap, $2,525-to-win feature. He had advanced to sixth when he clipped the wall and broke a J-Bar and driveshaft, ending his night. He finished in the 22nd position.

On Friday, Mullens turned in a strong performance from start to finish. First, he started fourth in his heat and took the checkered flag. After the redraw, he started on the pole in the night’s second 30-lap feature. He claimed the victory and the $2,525 winner’s share ahead of Jim Chisholm, Tripp Gyalord, Cole Falloway and Will Krup. Mullens also locked himself into the following day’s main event.

Saturday started positively for Mullens as he redrew pole position for the 80-lap finale. He led nearly all of the first quarter of the race before relinquishing the lead to eventual winner Drake Troutman. Mullens remained in the hunt until just before halfway when his tire delaminated, necessitating a change. From 31st position, Mullens charged ahead and came home 17th to close out the weekend.
