Top-5 result for Mullens in Doug Murphrey Memorial prelim

Tanner Mullens raced in the Pelican State over the weekend as the Summit USMTS schedule shifted to Greenwood, Louisiana’s Boothill Speedway for the 19th annual Doug Murphrey Memorial. Mullens began the two-day event with a top-five finish at the 3/8-mile clay oval.

On Friday, Mullens competed in a field of 40 USMTS Modifieds with a $5,000 first-place prize up for grabs. He qualified his Fuqua Trucking No. 02 car with the second-quickest time in his group and took third in his heat race. He began the 40-lap A-Main from the fifth position and picked up one spot to finish fourth behind Jim Chisholm, Chris Henigan and Rodney Sanders. Fifth place went to Kyle Strickler.

Thirty-eight Modified teams were at Boothill the next night for the $10,000-to-win event finale. Mullens qualified 10th in his group, finished fourth in his heat, and was runner-up in his B-Main to advance into the night’s 50-lap feature. He started 16th but was collected by a spinning car early, relegating him to a DNF and a 21st-place result.

Mullens is currently fourth in the Summit USMTS National Championship standings.
